Jonnu Smith Fantasy Outlook 2024

jonnu smith

Jonnu Smith signed with the Miami Dolphins coming from the Atlanta Falcons in free agency this offseason. The Miami Dolphins were in need of a tight end after losing tight end Mike Gesicki to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Dolphins this season need to utilize their tight ends more often and get them more involved in their offense.

Jonnu Smith is a big target at 6 ‘3’’ he will be in the tight end rotation for the Dolphins this season. Last season in 2023 while playing for the Falcons he had 70 targets on 50 receptions. He is a good addition to the Dolphins offense and will produce another threat for opposing teams.

Jonnu Smith was drafted in the 2017 NFL draft for the Tennessee Titans. He also played for the New England Patriots in 2021 before being traded to the Atlanta Falcons. Now, Smith is going to play for the Miami Dolphins this upcoming season.

The Miami Dolphins were the NFL leaders in yardage gained last season. The only other team behind them was the Dallas Cowboys in scoring. The Dolphins achieved this without much production at the tight end position. The Dolphins brought in veteran Jonnu Smith to hopefully fill in the hole at the tight end position.

In Atlanta, Smith had 50 receptions, 582 yards, and three touchdowns. If he wants to be more valuable in fantasy, Smith will have to be more involved with Miami’s high-powered offense. As of this moment, he is not a Tier 1 or Tier 2 tight end.

The tier 1 tight ends are Sam LaPorta (DET), Travis Kelce (KC), Trey McBride (ARZ), and Mark Andrews (BAL). The tier 2 tight ends consist of George Kittle (SF), Dalton Kincaid (BUF), Evan Engram (JAX), and David Njoku (CLE).

Final Thoughts

Jonnu Smith is most likely a TE3 in most fantasy leagues. The experts expect him to have the same kind of year he did last year in Atlanta. However, the Dolphins do need to get the tight end position involved more in the offense. Not just relying on Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Raheem Mostert. Head Coach Mike McDaniel is one of the best offensive-minded coaches in the league he will find Jonnu Smith a role in the offense this season.

If the Miami Dolphins can get Jonnu Smith incorporated into the offense he can be a threat in the middle of the field to get 1st downs and maybe break a few missed tackles because of his size and strength. Drafting Smith in the later rounds of the draft should be fine for any fantasy league. Even if not drafting Smith, picking him up off waivers will also be beneficial depending on what team the Dolphins play week-to-week.
