Jalen Hurts 2024 Fantasy Outlook: Will the Rushing Volume Be Enough?

Jalen Hurts Philadelphia Eagles

Despite ranking in the top two, only behind Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts actually took a step back in a way from his 2022 season.

2023 started decent for the 25-year-old All-Pro and Pro Bowl signal caller but it tailed off in a big way the second half of last year.

Hurts dealt with a dislocated finger and had multiple issues that affected his on-field play, including disputes with star wide receiver A.J. Brown and play-calling problems with his former offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, who is now with the rival Washington Commanders.

With offensive coordinator Kellen Moore brought into the fold, can Hurts elevate the new offense to greater heights and can it be even better than past seasons in 2024?

Heading into 2023, Jalen Hurts was the third-ranked fantasy quarterback but also was missing in action the last few weeks of the season. He followed a breakout 2022 year with a more consistent season, although he only had one 30-plus point performance in 2023.

In a down year for fantasy quarterbacks in general according to FantasyPros, besides Josh Allen, Hurts had 12 games over 20 fantasy points and averaged 21.9 points per game. The Eagle’s star quarterback had career highs in passing yards with 3,858 and passing touchdowns with 23.

That did come with some negatives, including a career-high in interceptions with 15 while having 6 fumbles, ultimately hampering the team in the end. Even with those turnovers, Hurts was fiend with his rushing touchdowns, as 15 was two more than his previous career high in 2022.

While Philadelphia boasts a top offensive line even without legend Jason Kelce, who retired this offseason, Jalen Hurts’ touchdown efficiency could come down in terms of his scores on the ground in 2024.

At 6’1″ and 223 pounds, Hurts will still be a threat on the goalline, especially with the tush push, but things may change now with the addition of star running back Saquon Barkley. Both being in the same backfield will benefit both the quarterback and the runner, but Barkley may convert more runs into scores, in a way D’Andre Swift couldn’t in 2023.

The Eagles quarterback has the 24th-ranked strength of schedule against his position, according to FantasyPros,  and is drafted behind Allen but above Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.

If the touchdowns do regress, will the yardage and efficiency through the air and on the ground for Hurts be enough to still be a top fantasy quarterback in 2024?

Final Thoughts On Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts will still have the fantasy upside to be a top quarterback, just off touchdown equity alone. However, he will have to step up in 2024 in terms of consistent yards and limit the turnovers.

The Eagles still have plenty of weapons heading into 2024, including Brown and DeVonta Smith, plus their star tight end Dallas Goedert. According to FantasyPros, Hurts’ ADP is around 25, near the same area as where he was drafted in fantasy leagues last year as a round two or three selection.

With so many quarterbacks emerging as possible options, I would consider taking the Philadelphia quarterback more in round three or four than round two. Similar to Josh Allen, although their floor is pretty high at the position, the potential drop from the top three to the top five with their roster change is totally in the realm of possibility in 2024.

In 2023, Allen led all fantasy players in total points with 410.6 and Hurts was fifth with 371.8 overall, and still, I think I would rather take an elite running back or receiver in that range.

While Jalen Hurts will still be a solid selection where he’s being taken currently and despite the offensive changes being great for the team on paper, I am not sure if they will be beneficial for the quarterback in fantasy ultimately.
