Ja Morant is entering his sixth season with the Memphis Grizzlies. He was the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. In 2022, Morant signed a five year rookie maximum contract extension with Memphis worth $197.2 million. Ja is coming off a tumultuous 2023-2024 season with the Grizz, having served a 25 game suspension and then a season ending shoulder injury. All said, Ja Morant only played nine games last season.
Ja Morant Career Production
Throughout his career, Ja Morant has been one of the most electrifying and productive players in the NBA. Morant was taken number two overall in the 2019 NBA Draft after spending two dominant seasons at Murray State. He won the 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year award, averaging 17.8 ppg, 7.3 apg, and 3.9 rpg.
After the 2021-2022 season, Ja Morant was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player. He raised his scoring average from 19.1 ppg in his second season to 27.4 ppg in his third. After his fourth NBA season, Morant was suspended after multiple alarming firearm related incidents. He began the 2023-2024 season serving a 25 game suspension. Once he was reinstated, Ja played nine games before injuring his shoulder and ultimately undergoing season ending surgery.
Ja Morant 2024-2025 Projections
Still only 25 years old, Ja Morant is likely just entering the prime of his career. Prior to his suspension and injury, he was forming more and more into a complete NBA plater. Morant is the 38th best fantasy basketball player in Rotowire’s preseason rankings.
“Morant has something to prove after missing practically all of last season. He has holes in his fantasy profile, but he’s unquestionably Memphis’ No. 1 option and young enough to make improvements.”
In Yahoo! fantasy basketball, Ja Morant is 100% rostered for the 2024-25 season. His current basic ADP is currently at 34.4, although they rank him 43rd in their rankings. He is projected by fantasydata to play 72 games and average 27.9 ppg, 8.22 apg, and 5.65 rpg. They also expect him to accumulate 27 blocks, 81 steals, 437 made free throws, and 124 made three point shots.
Final Thoughts
Getting Ja Morant in the third to fourth round (depending on league size) feels like a steal. I’d feel comfortable selecting him in the second round ahead of guys like LaMelo Ball, Devin Booker, Cade Cunningham, and Jamal Murray. Rotowire ranks all of them ahead of Morant for the 2024-2025 season. Even accounting for load management situations, Ja should be still considered in the top 20-25 of all fantasy basketball players.
In the 2022-2023 season, Ja Morant finished as the 30th overall player and the sixth ranked point guard in standard Sleeper leagues. With a healthy season, there is no reason to think he would be any lower than that…especially with the Grizzlies expecting a bounce back season.
