Ipswich Town vs Liverpool DFS Best Plays | 8/17/2024

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold in preseason

Premier League new boys Ipswich Town welcome one of the Premier League giants, Liverpool, to Portman Road for the 7:30 a.m. E.T. kick-off. The famous baseball hat-wearing Jürgen Klopp will no longer patrol the touchlines for the Reds, with exciting Dutch mastermind Arne Slot taking charge of his first competitive game for Liverpool.

Despite this being their first season back in the Premier League, Ipswich will play an attacking brand of football. Liverpool will have different tactics under their new manager but will not yield to their attacking attitude.

Luis Diaz– M/F ($13,800 DK)

Luis Diaz struggled last season, blowing hot and cold like several Liverpool forwards. He did finish the season with eight goals and five assists, averaging 10.1 fantasy points per game. Diaz is coming off a final preseason game against Sevilla, scoring a brace, while also scoring two goals in the Copa America.

The Colombian averaged over two shots per game and two key passes per game last season. Under Arne Slot, that should rise drastically if he can stay healthy. Despite the different divisions, Ipswich conceded 1.39 goals per game at home last season. Liverpool scored 2.26 goals per game last season while conceding just 1.08 per game, 1.29 of which were away from home.

Diaz should start up top, likely alongside Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota. If he does start on the bench, a swap to Trent Alexander-Arnold or Jota would be a good move.

Best Ipswich Town vs Liverpool Picks

Diogo Jota– M/F ($9,600 DK)

Diogo Jota, another Liverpool forward who flashed hot and cold last season, looks to be the favorite to grab the starting role as the central forward in the front three. Injuries hindered him last season, but after a solid Euros and preseason, he looks to continue his decent form. Last season, he averaged 11.1 fantasy points in 21 appearances, very rarely not going above 10.0 points in games. Despite not featuring much last season, Jota scored ten goals and is a candidate to perform well against Ipswich.

Trent Alexander-Arnold– D ($9,000 DK)

Liverpool’s set-piece king, Trent Alexander-Arnold, will pick up plenty of fantasy points from his crosses. Last season, TAA averaged nearly seven crosses per game, which is 4.2 points straight off the bat. He added three goals and four assists last season, which was low for his standards. Liverpool could grab a clean sheet, but if they don’t, Trent could make up for that with attacking returns.

Kostas Tsimikas– D ($6,400 DK)

Despite Ipswich being a danger when going forward, Liverpool can keep a clean sheet, having ten of them last season. Left-back Kostas Tsimikas is another attacking full-back who scored during the preseason. In 13 appearances last season, he averaged 9.5 points per game. Tsimkas does start, which looks likely, as he started the preseason game against Sevilla, where it looked like the first-choice eleven started. If Robertson starts over Tsimkas, he is only $1,000 more.

Ben Johnson– D ($3,600 DK)

Ben Johnson moved from West Ham to Ipswich Town during the transfer window, averaging 3.6 fantasy points per game in 14 appearances (four starts) last season. It’s very unlikely that Johnson will get you a clean sheet, but he is a cheap option that allows you to add several attacking options from Liverpool if that’s the route you want to take. He also does have attacking intent and could produce a return.
