Sideline to sideline is what you are looking for in your LB for your IDP league. When you look at the top guys, mainly Foyesade Oluokun or Roquan Smith, you see consistency. While consistency may be boring, in IDP they could be just as valuable as any skill player on your roster.
IDP Linebackers to Keep on Your Radar
Azeez Al-Shaair, Houston Texans
Al-Shaair comes to the Texans after a huge year in Tennessee. Houston made some big moves this offseason on both sides of the ball. Al-Shaair will benefit from the further development of Will Anderson Jr. upfront along with Danielle Hunter coming over from the Vikings, along with some 2nd day draft picks in the secondary. This could be a scary Texans Defense.
Ernest Jones IV, Tennessee Titans
Jones will take over for Azeez Al-Shaair in Tennessee and the expectation is that he will fill in nicely. With over 140 combined tackles last year, 4.5 sacks, and 6 PD, Ernest Jones showed off his versatility last year with the Rams and should see his game evolve more this year as he enters his 4th year. Also, with the Titans losing Derrick Henry in the offseason and Will Levis still learning how to play in this league, the Titans’ defense will be on the field a lot.
Alex Singleton, Denver Broncos
Singleton is coming off his best year yet and there is no reason to think that those numbers will go down. With only two games last year in single digits, he is the model of consistency. He can also put together a big game. In the last 9 games of the season, Singleton had 3 games in the 20’s and averaged 16.8 PPG. For comparison, Puka Nacua averaged 11.3 PPG and had 2 games of around 20 points in that same span. Obviously, that does not mean that Singleton is more important than Nacua in IDP leagues, but you cannot overlook the position.
Robert Spillane, Las Vegas Raiders
Spillane started off his tenure with the Raiders with a bang last year compiling over 140 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 3 interceptions. The Raiders got better up front in the offseason too with the huge offseason signing of Christian Wilkins, along with former teammate John Jenkins. With the further development of DE Malcolm Koonce and the always-scary Maxx Crosby, Las Vegas has the potential to have a very disruptive front four and Spillane will be the main beneficiary.
Conclusion
It’s time to start looking at your IDP Linebackers the same way you look at your flex spot. You may not need to draft this early, but you need to find good value. Flex positions and linebackers should also be drafted around the same time. If you are doubting this line of thinking, look back over the last few years and how many times you lost by just a couple of points or worse, under a point. Drafting a top-tier linebacker like Smith or Oluokun could be the difference between making the playoffs or not.
