Houston Texans Defense 2024 Outlook

Houston Texans Defense

The Houston Texans Defense has benefited from being really, really bad in the past. The good news about being an awful franchise is that all those losses eventually turn into high draft picks. Heck, teams constantly seem to be tanking in order to get this generational Quarterback here or that All-Pro Defensive End over there. Luckily, the Texans were so bad that they got both!

A lot of the headlines in Houston are about the explosive offense and with good reason. CJ Stroud has been a revelation at quarterback and looks like a seasoned veteran already. He was taken with the 2nd overall pick last year and tremendously outplayed 1st overall pick Bryce Young. C.J. showed a deft ability to find the open man and stepped up big time, which eased the burden of the Houston Texans Defense.

This season, Stroud might be even better, as will the Houston Texans Defense. The team brought in star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills to improve a pass core that features playmakers like Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Dalton Shultz, and Robert Woods. That alone should make Texan fans excited and keep the Houston Texans Defense on the sideline more often. They also traded for veteran running back Joe Mixon to give the rushing attack more stability. All together, the offense should be even better than last year.

But what about the Houston Texans Defense you ask? Well, that’s simple, they’re gonna be awesome! Right after the team took Stroud to be their franchise quarterback, they drafted Will Anderson Jr. out of Alabama. Anderson is a pass-rushing nightmare who made the Pro Bowl in his first NFL season. The dude is a beast!

Head coach Demeco Ryans could not have been happier. Ryans himself is a former star linebacker for both Alabama and the Texans, and he did an excellent job overseeing the Houston Texans Defense last year. The team finished 14th in total defense so they’re just scratching the surface.

Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. was the 3rd pick of the 2022 draft and he firmly broke out last year. He’s on his way to being a true lockdown cornerback who can face any of the top wide receivers in the game. They also added rookie Kamari Lassiter in the 2nd round of this year’s draft to fill the other cornerback position.

Will the Houston Texans Defense Explode?

The Houston Texans Defense didn’t stop with just the draft. They went out and signed former All-Pro defensive end Danielle Hunter. He immediately slots in opposite Anderson at Defensive End. Now, opposing offenses have to pick their poison, which should allow for plenty of sacks and tackles. Veterans Mario Edwards, Jimmie Ward and Desmond King II also provide experience and knowledge for the Houston Texans Defense.

And the Houston Texans Defense needs that experience to help the young guys. 2023 3rd-round pick Christian Harris and 5th-round pick Henry To’oTo’o are also former Alabama linebackers who start for the team. Their youth and experience from 2023 will set them up to help the Houston Texans Defense improve on last year.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Houston Texans Defense has a whole lot going for it this year. They have great coaching, great talent, and a desire to improve. If they stay healthy, then the sky is the limit for this talented Houston Texans Defense.
