Georgia Tech vs. Florida State DFS Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em|08/24/2024

Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei in practice

College football is finally back, and we have an intriguing conference game as the curtain-raiser. ACC champions Florida State face conference rivals Georgia Tech, both looking to start the season with an important win overseas in Dublin, Ireland.

The Seminoles have lost some key starters from last season, but they should still be pushing for consecutive conference titles. The Yellow Jackets are seeking back-to-back winning records under head coach Brent Key.

Here are a few of the players that we are leaning on heavily in this game. These players are in a good spot to put together a solid performance and have a favorable matchup.

Haynes King, GT, Quarterback ($10,000 DK)

Georgia Tech may be a +10.5 point underdog, but quarterback Haynes King is worth the $10,000 DraftKings. King averaged 27.1 FPPG last season; his lowest two-game totals were against good ACC defenses in Clemson and Miami, the lowest being 14.9 fantasy points against the Tigers. King had 2,755 passing yards and 648 rushing yards last season and caught Florida State in week 0. It’s the best opportunity to put solid numbers against a defense that may take some time to find their groove.

Roydell Williams, FSU, Running Back ($9,200 DK)

A transfer from Alabama this off-season, Roydell Williams comes into an FSU running back room that lost their top performer last season in Trey Benson. Williams averaged 8.0 FPPG as the Crimson Tide RB2 the previous season, with 560 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Heading into a conference that is not as strong, Williams is slated to be the RB1, taking the 150+ carries a season Benson saw in each of the last two seasons.

On the flip side of things, here are a few of the players we are sitting in this one.

DJ Uiagalelei, FSU, Quarterback ($12,000 DK)

DJ Uiagalelei had a strong season for Oregon State last season, but it was only in 2022 that the jury was out on him after a disastrous season at Clemson. Uiagalelei picks up his fantasy points with his arm, offering very little as a rushing option. Can we trust him back on a potential championship-winning team? Besides it being the first game of the season and overseas, there are enough concerns surrounding him to sit him in this game.

Eric Singleton Jr., GT, Wide Receiver ($5,600 DK)

Georgia Tech has several good wide receivers on its depth chart. Eric Singleton Jr., the team’s best receiver from last season, led the team in receiving yards, touchdowns, and FPPG in 2023. Although he is only $5,600, he is the most expensive Yellow Jackets wide receiver in this game. Last season, Singleton struggled against better teams in the conference and could see fewer targets in these games.

Malik Benson, FSU, Wide Receiver ($8,600 DK)*

Wide receiver Malik Benson, the second transfer this off-season from Alabama, has landed straight at the top of the depth chart. FSU utilized its big receivers considerably last season, with Benson set to take the role left by Keon Coleman. The former JUCO player didn’t get to showcase his skills too much for the Crimson Tide in 2023, but there was a snippet of production to get you excited. Expect Benson to be the main target in this game for DJ Uiagalelei, his safety net.

Total Apex Fade of the Game

Lawrance Toafili, FSU, Running Back ($9,600 DK)

When No.1 running back Trey Benson left for the NFL after the 2023 season, Lawrance Toafili may have thought it was his time to shine. However, with the transfer of Roydell Williams, this seems unlikely. Toafili is slated as the starting tailback on the roster, as he was in 2022, but he still only had half the carries of Benson with 69. He is also $400 more than Williams, which at that price is a concern, with his carry count a question against GT.

Conclusion

Aside from last season’s Aer Lingus Classic between two teams with a massive talent gap, these games are usually close. They are generally close games, with plenty of in-game struggles as teams get up to speed with the speed of competitive football. Don’t be surprised to see Florida State lean on the run game early, allowing new quarterback DJ Uiagalelei to ease into the game. It’s not a bad tactic early, with Georgia Tech’s new defensive coordinator, Tyler Santucci, finding success over his last two seasons with Duke in stopping opposing teams from scoring.

The game could be a low-scoring, close game at the half, with the Noles run game overpowering the Yellow Jackets in the second half, opening up the passing game for Malik Benson to thrive. GT will score points, so refrain from dominating your line-ups with FSU players.
