Garrett Wilson was drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft with the 10th overall pick out of Ohio State University. He filled a gaping hole for the Jets as they did not have a true WR1 on the roster before taking Wilson 10th overall. Wilson has had a successful two seasons in the NFL despite the shoddy quarterback play the Jets have given him.
Rookie of the Year
In the 2022 season, Wilson won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award despite only starting 12 of the 17 games. He went for 1,103 yards but only 4 touchdowns. While the touchdowns need improvement it was clear after Wilson’s rookie season that the Jets first-round pick would pay off. He also set franchise records for a rookie in receptions and receiving yards on his way to winning the award.
Rodgers to the Rescue
It became clear to the Jets staff that they needed an upgrade at quarterback to go with their new star receiver. The answer to their prayers came in the form of a trade with Green Bay that would send 4 time MVP Aaron Rodgers to the Jets for a handful of draft picks. After the trade became official it would send the reigning rookie of the year rocketing up people’s wide receiver rankings. Garrett Wilson was one of the highest-ranked receivers going into the 2023 season due to his success in year one and the massive quarterback upgrade.
Tragedy would strike the Jets nation as their newly acquired quarterback would go down for the season just a few snaps into the first game. Along with the Jets playoff hopes, Wilson’s fantasy value came crashing down with that injury. While Wilson managed to go over 1,000 yards for the second consecutive season, he only managed three touchdowns.
Dynasty Value Going Forward
For the second season in a row, Wilson’s value is sky-high due to the anticipation of what he can do with Rodgers leading the offense. It feels like competent quarterback play is the only thing holding Wilson back from having a top-five wide receiver finish in fantasy. While he’s gone over 1,000 yards each season in the NFL so far he has got to be able to find the endzone more consistently to reach his potential for fantasy owners. It’s not often that you see a receiver’s stats regress from his rookie season to his second year.
If you have Wilson and are worried about whether he can find the endzone with any consistency or if you’re worried about the rapidly aging Rodgers, now would be the time to try to trade him. His value will never be higher than it is now. If Rodgers gets hurt again or if Wilson just doesn’t end the year reaching the expected ceiling with a starting caliber quarterback.
If you want to try and acquire Wilson now is not the ideal time to do so. You’re likely going to have to overpay to get him on your team considering the high expectations placed on him. If he has another year where he underperforms expectations then next season would be the time to try and make a move to get him. The person rostering him likely will be ready to move on from Wilson in this scenario depending on their depth at the position. You will likely be able to get him for a better price in this scenario.
