Garrett Nussmeier 2024 Devy Outlook

garrett nussmeier

From Lake Charles, Louisiana, Garrett Nussmeier was a four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings. He was ranked as the 14th-best quarterback in the country and the 84th overall player. Nussmeier has completed 129 of 219 career passes for 1,720 yards with 11 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in his Tigers career, the majority of which came in a backup role.

Nussmeier’s most notable college experience came in the 2022 SEC Championship game and the 2023 ReliaQuest Bowl. Nussemeier entered the 2022 SEC Championship game when starter Jayden Daniels was injured against Georgia and didn’t return. Nussmeier started the entire second half. In that limited action, Nussmeier broke the SEC Championship game record for passing yards in a half against the eventual national champion Bulldogs, completing 15 of 27 passes for 294 yards with two touchdowns to an interception.

In the 2023 ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin, Garrett Nussmeier led the LSU Tigers to a 35-31 comeback win over the Wisconsin Badgers. In the game, Nussmeier went 31-45 for 395 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception and was named the bowl game Most Valuable Player in the process.

Garrett Nussmeier as a Player

Nussmeier can make all of the necessary throws to anywhere on the field, especially when given a clean pocket. He steps up into the pocket while looking downfield, resets his feet, and delivers with good ball placement and strength. He possesses good accuracy overall, including excellent accuracy on short routes and intermediate throws to backs and receivers, and places the ball in front to lead receivers to potential yardage after the catch. He gets the ball out quickly and can make split-second decisions, which allows him to be effective with off-platform throws.

An athletic quarterback who is a threat to leave the pocket and gain positive yardage at any time, Nussmeier possesses very good vision, balance, elusiveness, deceptive speed, and power as a runner. He has the instinct to make plays when forced to improvise and can make off-platform throws when needed. Even though he isn’t near the runner Jayden Daniels was for LSU, he can still make plays if given room to run.

Devy Outlook

This season, Garrett Nussmeier has a great opportunity to raise his draft stock for the 2025 NFL Draft. My good friend Andy Pham (@Andy_Pham1 on X) has been hyping Nussmeier for the last year and a half. We have had several discussions about how Nussmeier is probably a better overall QB prospect than reigning Heisman Trophy-winning QB Jayden Daniels. Nussmeier has a better arm, has better accuracy, is better at avoiding the big hits, and is better at reading defenses (based on his limited film).

This time last season, Carson Beck was not getting the love he should have gotten, and now he will be a leading contender for the 2024 Heisman Trophy award and possible number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Garrett Nussmeier is being overlooked in a lot of the same ways Beck was and has close to the same potential. With the type of weapons LSU will have and the type of offensive season they will expect to have, Nussmeier could be launched into the same orbit Carson Beck is currently in.

I have him ranked as the overall QB3 in Devy and the QB2 for the 2025 NFL Draft. Honestly, with more tape to evaluate and exposure, Nussmeier could rival Georgia QB Carson Beck and make a play for QB1 in the 2025 NFL Draft Class. I plan on trying to acquire him in every devy and Campus to Canton league I participate in this off-season.

NFL Potential

With the type of NFL Draft capital I’m expecting Garrett Nussmeier to receive, he would be a projected franchise Quarterback for whatever team drafts him. He has the potential to be a QB2 as a rookie and mid-back end QB1 in Dynasty leagues as he develops in the NFL. As far as NFL comparisons, I see a lot of Dak Prescott in the style Nussmeier plays with. He can make every throw, he can throw off-platform, and is mobile enough to make defenses respect his running ability.
