Week 9 in the NFL was the week of unknowns at the position. Most superstar-level tight ends fell into the pile with a few that came out of nowhere. What that means is that any tight end seems like can break out but at the same time, that also means they could disappoint to an extreme level. With that level of fluctuation at the position, it makes it the toughest position to predict. But with that all being said, it makes your decision on whether to start these players even more important.
Tight End Start’em: Week 10
Buccaneers TE Cade Otton
With the major injuries to the Buccaneers’ top two receivers, the Bucs tight end has stepped up and become a top three tight end play. Otton has had at least 18 fantasy points in three consecutive weeks, with two of those weeks being 20-point performances. The Bucs don’t have a great option at receiver and are force-feeding their tight end. Baker Mayfield seems to trust him more than any other pass catcher who is healthy. Looking long term, even when Mike Evans comes back from injury, he still should be a must-start because Evans will get a lot of attention which Otton will take advantage of.
Bengals TE Mike Gesicki
The Bengals have found their diamond in the rough on offense with their starting tight end. Without Tee Higgins, the former Penn State tight end has elevated his game with two consecutive terrific performances. The Bengals will be taking on the Ravens on Thursday Night Football. The Ravens are no longer known for their defense and have been gettable.
Another reason to be optimistic for Thursday night is that the Bengals should be trailing in this one, which means Burrow could throw the ball nearly 40 times. That bodes well for more targets for Gesicki in a big primetime game as a must-start player.
Tight End Sit’em: Week 10
Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson
The Vikings are happy to have their Pro Bowl tight end back on the field. While Vikings fans and players are pumped to see him suit up, that doesn’t mean he is a viable fantasy start. Hockenson is clearly being worked back to full football shape and not playing in the same amount of snaps that he will in the weeks to come. If you are an owner of the Vikings tight end, he is a great stash for this and maybe next week, which will lead to him being an easy start for the foreseeable future. But until he looks like himself, he should not be in many lineups in Week 10.
Jets TE Tyler Conklin
The Jets have turned into a three-man show with the pass catchers. Aaron Rodgers only seems to trust Breece Hall, Garrett Wilson, and Davante Adams. That makes Conklin that odd man out of Jets pass catchers. This offense has not come close to clicking this season and adding Adams has meant even fewer targets for the Jets tight end. No matter who the Jets are facing off against, Conklin needs to be benched because he doesn’t get enough production without a touchdown for owners to have confidence in starting.
