The NFL season is almost upon us. You’ve planned your draft. You’ve done several mocks. You feel like you’re just about ready to draft. But you are looking for a last-minute strategy to one-up your league mates.
I suggest doubling down on two running backs from the same team. Most teams give regular carries to two running backs during the season. But sometimes it’s hard to determine which one will get the majority of carries. You need not worry if you have both of them. The key is to draft both of them without using high picks. Here are some duos I love:
Nick Chubb and Jerome Ford
I love this duo. Ford will start the season as RB1 until Nick Chubb is healthy. Chubb will start the season on the PUP (Physically unable to perform) list due to tears in his MCL and ACL last September. Cleveland has one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and whoever starts should be a top 10 Fantasy back. According to Yahoo, Chubb’s average draft position is 100 while Ford’s is 121.
Jonathan Brooks and Chuba Hubbard
Another good duo to have on your team. Their offensive line is not as good as the Browns. However, it should be improved with the acquisitions of Damien Lewis and Robert Hunt at both guard spots. Brooks is a rookie 2nd round pick who is coming off a torn ACL in November (placed on the NFI list today).
It sounds like other teams loved Brooks as the top running back in the draft despite the injury. Hubbard played well last year with over 900 yards in 12 starts including 5 TDS and 39 receptions. According to Yahoo, Brooks’s average draft position is 113 while Hubbard’s is 131.
Ezekiel Elliot and Rico Dowdle

Someone is going to have to run the ball in Dallas. While Ezekiel Elliot is the listed starter on the Cowboys depth chart, he is entering his ninth year in the league. That’s a lot for a running back. So why not draft Rico Dowdle as well? Elliot is likely to get goalline carries.
If you are in a PPR league (Point Per Reception), Dowdle will have more value as the pass-catching back. And if Elliot shows his age, Dowdle could be in line for more carries. According to Yahoo, Elliot’s average draft position is 115 while Dowdle’s is 129.
Zach Moss and Chase Brown
After trading away Joe Mixon to the Texans, the Bengals signed Zach Moss to a 2-year $8 million deal. Brown, however, a 5th-round pick in 2023, is regarded as the better talent. It sounds like the Bengals are not sure who will emerge with more touches. So why not draft both? According to Yahoo, Moss’s average draft position is 99 while Brown’s is 121.
Final thoughts
I like this strategy for one of these running-back tandems. But it’s important to make sure you have room on your bench. With injuries and bye weeks, make sure you have fill-ins for your lineup. Having multiple IR spots helps as well. Chubb and Brooks could be used in those spots to start the seasons. Also if you want both backs from each team, I recommend drafting each of them a round or two before you think they will go. Just to be sure. Go draft one of these pairs and win your league.
