Fantasy Baseball: Top-10 First Basemen and Projections (6-10)

first basemen

Baseball season is almost upon us. Spring is in the air…at least in some parts of the country. Pitchers and Catchers start reporting to Spring Training camp on February 9. With that, Fantasy Baseball drafts are set to begin or are already underway.  First Basemen tend to be major power producers in Fantasy Baseball, so let’s dive into the top 10.

Fantasy Baseball: Top-10 First Basemen and Projections (6-10)

Spencer Torkelson (Detroit Tigers)

2023 Stats: BA.234, OBP.314, SLG.447, OPS.761, 31 HR, 95 RBI, 88 R, 142 H, 34 2B, 1 3B, 67 BB, 171 K, 3 SB

Torkelson took a massive leap forward in his sophomore season.  With the retirement of Miguel Cabrera, Spencer Torkelson is now the current face of the Detroit Tigers. He is also one of the best fantasy first basemen in the American League.  If he can cut down on his strikeouts, he could wind up in the top 5 by season’s end.

2024 Projections per FantasyPros:

BA.243, OBP.323, SLG.460, OPS.783, 30 HR, 87 RBI, 82 R, 137 H, 30 2B, 1 3B, 66 BB, 152 K, 3 SB

Paul Goldschmidt (St. Louis Cardinals)

2023 Stats: BA.268, OBP.363, SLG.447, OPS.810, 25 HR, 80 RBI, 89 R, 159 H, 31 2B, 0 3B, 87 BB, 161 K, 11 SB

Paul Goldschmidt had his worst statistical year in nearly a decade in 2023.  It was by far his worst season as a Cardinal.  It appears Father Time is catching up to him. However, he still remains among the top 10 first basemen in fantasy. Maybe more team success could result in more personal success for him. St. Louis should be better in 2024 and possibly for Goldy as well.

2024 Projections per FantasyPros:

BA.268, OBP.357, SLG.461, OPS.818, 26 HR, 87 RBI, 92 R, 153 H, 30 2B, 1 3B, 78 BB, 150 K, 8 SB

Cody Bellinger

https://gty.im/1692934062

2023 Stats: BA.307, OBP.356, SLG.525, OPS.881, 26 HR, 97 RBI, 95 R, 153 H, 29 2B, 1 3B, 40 BB, 87 K, 20 SB

Cody Bellinger had a terrific season in 2023.  He was named National League Comeback Player of the Year and finished with a career-best batting average.  He also stole 20 bags for the first time in his career.  I wouldn’t expect a ton of regression in his power numbers. However, I could see a slight dip in the batting average in 2024.  Currently a free agent, Bellinger should be with a team in the coming weeks.

2024 Projections per FantasyPros:

BA.259, OBP.320, SLG.447, OPS.768, 23 HR, 82 RBI, 81 R, 139 H, 28 2B, 2 3B, 48 BB, 118 K, 17 SB

Christian Walker (Arizona Diamondbacks)

https://gty.im/1769735162

2023 Stats: BA.258, OBP.333, SLG.497, OPS.830, 33 HR, 103 RBI, 86 R, 150 H, 36 2B, 2 3B, 62 BB, 127 K, 11

SB

Christian Walker has finished among the top 10 first basemen over the last two seasons.  Barring injury, I don’t see that changing in 2024.  His power potential alone should keep him fantasy viable, but he also steals bases and doesn’t strike out a ton.  Walker has top 5-7 potential moving forward.

2024 Projections per FantasyPros:

BA.254, OBP.328, SLG.462, OPS.790, 28 HR, 93 RBI, 82 R, 144 H, 30 2B, 2 3B, 62 BB, 129 K, 6 SB

Nolan Jones (Colorado Rockies)

https://gty.im/1754704579

2023 Stats: BA.294, OBP.387, SLG.540, OPS.926, 20 HR, 62 RBI, 60 R, 108 H, 22 2B, 4 3B, 53 BB, 126 K, 20 SB

In his first full season, Nolan Jones had a top-20 finish in 2023. He should get better with more experience and playing in Colorado will only benefit him. A top-10 fantasy season is not out of the question, and actually quite likely.

2024 Projections per FantasyPros:

BA.269, OBP.356, SLG.475, OPS.831, 24 HR, 80 RBI, 82 R, 138 H, 29 2B, 4 3B, 70 BB, 170 K, 16 SB
