Travis Etienne was drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft with the 25th overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Etienne joined his college quarterback in Jacksonville as the Jaguars took Trevor Lawrence first overall in the same draft. The Jags wanted to try and recreate some of the success that the tandem had in college together. Unfortunately for Jacksonville, that Clemson magic would have to wait as Etienne tore a tendon in his foot in the preseason, ending his rookie season before it began.
Jags Fans Initial Excitement
To the excitement of Jags fans everywhere, Etienne finally made his long-awaited debut opening day of the 2022 season. The foot injury Etienne suffered during his rookie season hasn’t slowed him down at all as he has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his two seasons since the injury, including 5 touchdowns in 2022 and 11 in 2023.
Etienne’s contract runs through the 2024 season with a club option for 2025 for $6 million. The Jaguars are all but guaranteed to pick it up as his production so far is worth well more than $6 million. They may even try to give him a longer extension first. While this technically isn’t a contract year for Etienne, he is motivated to have another strong rushing year with over 1,000 yards for a third consecutive season to secure an extension before he hits free agency.
Dynasty Value Going Forward
This year should be one of the best years for the Jaguars offensively since they drafted quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Etienne. This is the first year there is continuity on the coaching staff and with the offensive play calling. Etienne is projected to be a top ten running back in most rankings, thanks to his solid performance last season. While Etienne doesn’t seem to have league-winning value on the Jaguars pass-heavy offense, he should provide consistent production at the position which makes him ranked appropriately in the 8-10 range.
Since Etienne is ranked appropriately, now is not the time to try and trade for him as he likely performed around his ceiling last season with 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns. You can expect the same output going forward but you’re likely going to have to give up more than you’re comfortable with to acquire him.
If you already own Etienne in Dynasty this is the season you’ve been waiting for with him. The Jaguars hope to have a better defense than last year with new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielson stepping in. This would mean less passing trying to come from behind to win and more ground-and-pound style offense with the run game. While that may mean Etienne sharing more of the rushing snaps, it would still increase production for Etienne over the fantasy season assuming he stays healthy.
