A five-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, Drew Allar committed to Penn State over plenty of elite college teams. He was one of several top quarterbacks from the 2022 class. However, he is the only one with fewer questions to answer regarding his production.
As a freshman, Allar saw bits of action behind starting quarterback Sean Clifford, who is now on the Green Bay Packers roster. Allar looked assured in the pocket in that small sample size and showcased great arm talent across all field levels. Heading into his sophomore season as the starter, it was a bumpy road in production. Can Allar take further steps before potentially heading to the 2025 NFL Draft?
Drew Allar 2023 Stats And Production
Despite the inconsistencies during the 2023 season, there was plenty to be optimistic about for Drew Allar. In his first season as the Penn State starting quarterback, Allar finished with stats of 233-389 for 2,631 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and two interceptions. Although not a dual threat, Allar can tuck the ball and gain positive yards when needed.
The glaring knock for Allar was his struggles when he faced more robust defenses, such as Michigan and Ohio State. Allar had under a 50% completion rate in five games last season, two against the mentioned teams. When the game moved faster than usual, he became more erratic when processing and making throws. Despite this, there was more positive than negative during his first season as the starter.
Drew Allar 2024 Devy Outlook
It’s no secret that Penn State uses a high dose of rushing plays, which eats into Drew Allar’s production. When he has the ball in hand, we want to see him being more consistent when throwing the ball this coming season. Allar avoids Big Ten Conference rivals Michigan and Oregon and gets Ohio State at Beaver Stadium in 2024. It’s a great schedule to boost his stock, with all eyes on Ohio State and Wisconsin, two sound defensive teams he will face.
Penn State doesn’t possess the most incredible wide receivers in college football, which isn’t great for Allar. He might need to put the team on his back when needed, a quarterback trait the NFL scouts love. During the Penn State Blue-White Spring Game, Allar showed excellent chemistry with his offense, potentially developing into a more vocal leader for the team.
The quarterback position is very choppy regarding fantasy quarterbacks who could declare for the draft. Allar is near the top, and with a solid season, he could be the No.1 rookie quarterback in the NFL next season.
Final Thoughts
Heading into his third season in college, Drew Allar will have a decision to make after the 2024 season. Does he stay in school for another season or declare for the 2025 NFL Draft? I think that decision will come down to how he performs this season.
If you have shares in Allar, there is no need to panic about his current value. He has one or two seasons to propel that and be fantasy-relevant at the next level. Allar has the prototypical size for the NFL and all the tools to be a first-round draft pick. All these grey areas that have been highlighted just need to be ironed out. We could see that as Penn State and Allar have a new and exciting offensive coordinator for the 2024 season.
