Diontae Johnson was traded from Pittsburgh to Carolina this offseason for Corner Donte Jackson and a pick swap. Johnson is going into year six of his NFL career and is in the final year of his contract, so he has much to prove with Carolina this season.
It bodes well for Johnson that he is going to a team where the leading receiver is an aging Adam Theilen. He should be a dynamic weapon for his young quarterback Bryce Young and easily take over as the wide receiver one for the Panthers this season.
Lackluster Production in Pittsburgh
Johnson broke out in the 2021 season for the Steelers, going for over 1100 yards and 8 touchdowns in 16 games. The 2021 season seemed to be the outlier as the following season the standout receiver only had 882 yards and zero touchdowns despite starting all 17 games that season.
The Steelers offense as a whole had a down year in 2023 due to inconsistent quarterback play and inadequate play calling, even still Johnson’s touchdowns went up from zero in 2022 to five in 2023, but he only accrued 717 yards through the 13 games he played in. On September 10, week one of the NFL season Johnson pulled his hamstring and didn’t return until week 7 which could have assisted in his poor stat line. When the 2023 season was said and done Johnson finished as the 43rd wide receiver in standard scoring leagues and the 45th-ranked wide receiver in PPR scoring.
Make or Break Season
Johnson going into a contract year with a new team that is lacking at the receiver position bodes very well for his fantasy owners this season. If he has any chance to return to his peak 2021 form this is the prime chance, to prove he is still capable of being a wide receiver one in this league. If you’re looking for value at receiver this season, he could give you WR1 production at a discounted price due to his last two seasons production.
Johnson’s value is at an all-time low making it a prime time to trade for him in dynasty leagues if the person rostering him is worried about the steady decline in production or if they don’t believe that Bryce Young is a capable quarterback. Johnson suffered a groin pull in practice on August 13 which is something to keep an eye on, he is not expected to miss any time as of right now, but this might drive his value down even more making him more of a bargain if he goes off this season.
