Devonta Smith is coming off back-to-back 1000 yard seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles ever since the development of Star Quarterback Jalen Hurts and the introduction of AJ Brown to this roster. His Rookie season in 2021 he broke the Eagles all-time rookie receiving yards record. So the ascension is there for the taking in a New offense in 2024 for Smith as he should be a huge part of Kellen Moore’s offense in 2024.
Moore’s Offense should help all of the receivers out but will help Smith especially because Moore can get him moving around the formations again like he was at Alabama during his Heisman campaign.
Devonta Smith 2023 Production
Devonta Smith had 81 receptions on 112 targets achieving 1,066 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023 wearing Midnight Green last season which got him into the top 20 last season in PPR leagues like ESPN and NFL etc. Fantasy Pros ranked Smith as WR 16 last season in the PPR format. Smith still managed to have a great overall season even though he had his FD/RR ranking drop to 39th, and his YPRR sat at only 33rd (minimum 50 targets).
The 2023 collapse withstanding, Smith probably had his best game of his young career in the playoff defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith had 8 receptions for 142 yards in that game as he played amazingly for Philadelphia in that game which should have raised some eyebrows towards his 2024 outlook even more.
Devonta Smith 2024 Fantasy Outlook
Devonta Smith’s production according to ESPN’s projections is going to have a slight drop off with their projections having him at 84 receptions for 1,040 yards and 6 touchdowns for the 21st spot on the receivers list. The floor is high for Smith as he should be a top end WR2. Fantasy Pros has Smith has the 40th overall prospect in 2024 with the 28th ranked schedule which is one of the toughest schedules.
Kellen Moore’s offense will be a lighting rod type of offensive innovation the Eagles have desperately needed after the disaster of the 2023 season especially down the stretch, and Smith is expected to be a huge part of that dynamic especially if a piece gets hurt here and there during the season.
Smith has been a high ceiling wide receiver two for most of his career ever since the acquisition of AJ Brown but this year I believe both receivers can achieve WR1 type numbers this season especially if the run balance creates the more deep ball plays that the Eagles had in 2022 again because defenses have to account for the run more because of the acquisition of Saquon Barkley.
Final Thoughts
I feel that Devonta Smith is going to exceed the ESPN/Fantasy Pros expectations because of the boost of the Kellen Moore offense as the Eagles should be a more efficient and effective offense in 2024. As Moore is going to use his Wide Receivers over the middle and motion them across the more in 2024 than the Eagles did in 2023 which will create mismatches for not only the 2020 Heisman Trophy Winner but for everyone in that offense as I think they’ll be in the top five offenses this season.
Smith will also be a beneficiary of the new running attack with Saquon Barkley because the defenses they’ll face will have to play more eight man boxes leaving the one-on-one on the outside more often for both Smith and Brown. I would grab Smith in Round two or three of PPR drafts, or rounds 3 or 4 of standard drafts.
