In the last game for the MLB in the Divisional Series, the most entertaining series comes to a game five and a win-and-go-home affair with the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians. The Tigers had a chance to win the series at home in game four but a game-leading home run in the 7th inning of that game has brought the series back to Cleveland to see who will face the New York Yankees in the Championship Series. With the entire baseball world with eyes on this game, this game surely will live up to the high expectations.
Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians DFS Start’em
Detroit Tigers OF Matt Vierling($7,600 on DraftKings)
Vierling is the lone Detroit Tigers player with any playoff experience as he was on the 2022 Phillies team that went to the World Series. Vierling has hit third the whole series but he only has two hits, both came in game two which was against today’s opposing pitcher Matthew Boyd.
Surely, the Detroit Tigers will want to lean on the player who has experience in a game like this to deliver, especially in a road environment. Boyd is a left-handed pitcher and Vierling is a righty which makes this a good matchup. Vierling is also one of the rare players who Detroit won’t take out in the middle of a game due to matchup so from a DFS perspective, you will know that he will get a guaranteed four plate appearances.
Cleveland Guardians OF Lane Thomas($7,400 on DraftKings)
Thomas was one of the best players on a struggling Nationals team and since joining Cleveland, things have continued in a great way for him. The outfielder has been hitting cleanup which means he hits right after superstar Jose Ramirez which means there is usually traffic when he is up to hit.
The Cleveland Guardians are facing Tarik Skubal who looks like the best pitcher in baseball. But Thomas has the right-handed batter to left-handed pitcher matchup which is the main positive. Thomas is the most consistent right-handed hitter and he has the highest ceiling as well. Most of the Guardians have bad matchups in this game but Thomas certainly has the biggest upside today in DFS.
Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians DFS Sit’em
Detroit Tigers 1B Spencer Torkelson($7,000 on DraftKings)
The first baseman was supposed to be the next guy big-time player for the franchise but it just hasn’t worked out that way. Following a 30-home run season, Torkelson has spent splitting time between the majors and the minors. Torkelson hasn’t shown that level of power or just hitting ability since.
With that all being said, it feels like one of the easier sits with the price point DraftKings has him at. $7,000 is an expensive price to have him at. The ceiling can be high but it is heavily reliant on him to hit a homer which he hasn’t hit one since mid-September. This is a safe sit which will allow you to take better value players for your lineup.
Cleveland Guardians 1B Josh Naylor($7,200 on DraftKings)
With the Cleveland Guardians facing off against one of the best pitchers in baseball, most of them are bad matchups in this game but Josh Naylor is definitely one to sit. Skubal is a left-handed pitcher and with Naylor being a left-handed hitter, this is already a tough matchup.
Naylor does have a hit in every game in this series but to expect that to continue when the Detroit Tigers have Skubal on the mound is unlikely. Naylor hits .224 against lefties and this is the best left-handed pitcher in the game of baseball. If this price point was lower than $7,000, then it would be a good risk play but because he is listed at $7,200, it’s in the best interest to not start Naylor.
