Dallas Cowboys Defense 2024 Fantasy Outlook

Dallas Cowboys Defense

There’s a thing called talent and luckily, the Dallas Cowboys Defense has it! And that’s why there’s every reason to believe that the Cowboys Defense can be the best D in fantasy football this season. Beyond talent, a great coaching staff will put the defenders in an excellent position to make plays.

The Dallas Cowboys Defense has been great in years past. They were even known as the Doomsday Defense in the late 1960s and 1970s when hall-of-fame defenders Cliff Harris, Harvey Martin, and Randy White reigned supreme. They were so good that they won two Super Bowl titles in the 70s. That Dallas Cowboys Defense was elite!

Fast forward to the early 1990s and the Dallas Cowboys Defense once again reigned supreme with defenders like Charles Haley and Darren Woodson. Those defenses one-upped the Doomsday Defense by winning 3 Super Bowls. And this year, behind stars Micah Parson and Trevon Diggs, the Dallas Cowboys Defense might return to that high level of success. They could even be one of the greatest DSTs of all time! I know, I know, I’m a Dallas Cowboy homer but hear me out.

Everything concerning the Dallas Cowboys Defense starts with number eleven himself, Micah Parsons. The hybrid pass rusher/linebacker/superstar is one of the most unique defenders in the NFL. Last season, he made his 3rd pro-bowl in 3 seasons and is primed to make number 4. Last season alone Parsons had 64 total tackles and an incredible 14 sacks for the Dallas Cowboys Defense.

But he didn’t do it alone. The Cowboys saw an incredible leap from cornerback Daron Bland who had 9 interceptions in his first year starting full time. Bland replaced an injured Trevon Diggs, who missed most of last season with a torn ACL in his left leg. Diggs returns to the Dallas Cowboys Defense this year and has his own history of domination. In 2021, Diggs had an insane 11 interceptions and he’s back to strengthen the Dallas Cowboys Defense.

At defensive end, pro-bowler Demarcus Lawrence returns as the longest-tenured Cowboy defender. He may be entering the season at age 32 but he’s still a force who has to be respected in both the pass and run game. His presence alone means offenses have to account for his pass-rushing potential, which means they can’t focus too much on Micah Parsons.

Dallas Cowboys Defense on the rise

Mike Zimmer was brought in to replace Dan Nolan as the Defensive coordinator and his experience means the Dallas Cowboys Defense won’t lose a step. Zimmer is a former Cowboys defensive coordinator who was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings for eight seasons, so he has a ton of experience coaching defense.

In free agency, the team did make one big signing. Middle linebacker Eric Kendricks joined the squad and is a big upgrade over the now-retired Leighton Vander Esch. Kendricks was All-Pro in 2019 under Zimmer in Minnesota, so he knows the defense inside and out. He’ll serve as another veteran presence who should help the Defense go over the top.

Now, it’s not all gravy for the Dallas Cowboys Defense. They lost cornerback Stephon Gilmore to free agency and recently lost defensive end Sam Williams to a torn ACL/MCL. These losses shouldn’t cause too many problems for the Dallas Cowboys Defense but they’re worth mentioning.

Final Thoughts

Alongside the Dallas Cowboys Defense is a talented Special Teams. Robert Turbin is an explosive returner who should benefit greatly from the new kickoff rules. Kicker Brandon Aubrey made 36 out of 38 field goals and 49 out of 52 extra points last season as a rookie. Bryan Anger has a strong leg and had the 2nd highest yards per punt in the league. Combined with the Dallas Cowboys Defense and you’ve got perhaps the best DST in fantasy!
