The Cleveland Guardians take on the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of the three-game set. The Reds were able to hang on in the opener, winning 5-4. Cincinnati took a 5-0 lead through three innings and was able to keep the Guardians’ offense under control. Pitcher Brady Singer picked up his fifth win of the year. For Cleveland, Jose Ramirez stayed hot, homering in the eighth inning to cut the lead to one. Can Cleveland tie up the series, or will Cincinnati get another victory in the rivalry series?

Cleveland Guardians
The Cleveland Guardians fell behind early and couldn’t quite complete the comeback. The offense has done what it has done all season. Jose Ramirez homered in the 8th inning, and Carlos Santana had two hits. Outside of those two, the rest of the lineup was very quiet. Leadoff hitter Steven Kwan was 0 for 3 but did have a walk and scored in last night’s contest. While he is hitting .320 on the season, he has cooled off as of late.
Right-hander Slade Cecconi will make his season debut on Saturday against the Reds. The 28-year-old acquired Cecconi in December from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He suffered an oblique strain in spring training, landing him on the IL for the beginning of the season. In three minor league rehabilitation starts, he went 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA, ten strikeouts, and two walks in 13 innings.
Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds got another huge performance from right fielder Will Benson. Over the past seven games, right fielder Will Benson is slashing .357/.714/1.185 with one home run and four RBIs, and he continued the success at the plate last night. He went 2 for 4 last night, crushing a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. Austin Hays also homered and had two hits last night.
The Reds send left-hander Brent Suter to the mound to face the Guardians. If you follow baseball, you are not reading this wrong. Suter has been fantastic out of the bullpen, but the Reds are using him in an “opener” role, which has become very popular amongst some teams. He has been fantastic out of the bullpen, and it would not be surprising to see him go two innings. However, it does mean that the Guardians will likely get to the bullpen very quickly in this game. In his last appearance against the White Sox, he threw for an inning and allowed one hit and one walk.

Prediction
This pitching matchup is almost impossible to figure out. You’ve got someone making a season debut and a reliever who will likely only pitch an inning or two. Here’s what pushes me to take the Cincinnati Reds in today’s game. Cecconi’s minor league rehab starts don’t instill confidence in me. 0-2 with an ERA of almost five in the minor leagues? I know those rehab starts are different, but the Reds’ lineup is better than a minor league lineup. Cleveland’s offense has also been awful for the past week. Also, I can’t resist plus odds. Give me the Reds.
