CJ Stroud 2024 Fantasy Outlook: Will He Build Upon His Strong Rookie Year?

CJ Stroud 2024 fantasy outlook texans

CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans were supposed to be one of the worst teams in the NFL last year. Instead, the rookie came out and led his team to a division title and a playoff win. His command of the offense was on full display as he instantly built rapport with Nico Collins and Tank Dell. The team traded for Stefon Diggs, giving him another offensive weapon to throw. Is he a surefire top-ten quarterback in fantasy football for 2024?

CJ Stroud completed 63.9% of his passes for 4,108 yards, along with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions. On the ground, he rushed 39 times for 167 yards and three more scores. According to FantasyData, he scored a total of 276 points, which is an average of 18.4 points per game. His ability to limit turnovers was part of the reason for his success. In fantasy football, turnovers are detrimental.

While Stroud and the rest of the Texans’ offense exceeded expectations, it didn’t mean that he was dominating the fantasy football world. He was a consistent quarterback, but every so often, he would have a subpar performance. He wasn’t in the top tier of quarterbacks but in the one below.

CJ Stroud 2024 Fantasy Outlook

CJ Stroud is one of many Houston Texans who are getting a lot of hype for fantasy football in 2024. FantasyData has Stroud ranked in the top five this year. However, Stroud was a little more boom or bust than people realized last year. He had seven weeks where he failed to reach 20 fantasy points and two weeks where he failed to reach 10. Part of this is because he is a pocket-passing quarterback. In fantasy football, the dual-threat quarterback is king.

Will the Texans win more games than the Colts this year? Probably. However, Anthony Richardson has the potential to dwarf Stroud’s fantasy numbers because of his rushing ability. Another thing to worry about this year is the presence of Joe Mixon. Stroud’s numbers were down because the Texans wanted to run the ball. Last year, they didn’t have a true number-one running back. Now, with Mixon in the backfield, the Stroud could be throwing the ball less.

Final Thoughts

In two-quarterback leagues, CJ Stroud is a must-have. His consistent play means managers can plug him in and forget about the roster spot. In a one-quarterback league, there might be some better options in more quarterback-friendly offenses. What worries me about Stroud is how high people are drafting him. He is being drafted like he is in the same fantasy tier as Josh Allen when the numbers don’t back that up.

There are a lot of assumptions being made about how the Texans will look in 2024. CJ Stroud is a solid pick and managers will likely be very happy to have him on the team. However, be careful not to overdraft and miss out on a stud running back or receiver simply to get the Houston Texans’ quarterback on your team.
