Charlie Woerner will start 2024 as the TE2 for the Atlanta Falcons. Although he is positioned behind Kyle Pitts in the depth chart, which might seem to limit his potential, Woerner still has some potential to contribute modestly.
In this article, we’ll break down what you can expect from Charlie Woerner this year.
Charlie Woerner 2024 Fantasy Outlook
Charlie Woerner’s Role in Atlanta
Charlie Woerner starts his 5th year as a pro in a new landscape. He played the first 4 years of his career with the 49ers and now joins the Falcons for 2024. For this year, he will assume the TE2 role behind Kyle Pitts, who is the undisputed TE1.
Woerner´s play style is mostly known for his solid blocking abilities, which make him a valuable asset in the run game. Even in SF, he had this role while TE George Kittle was the main pass catcher.
However, occasionally, Woerner might see some production through the passing game as well. Although through the first 4 years of his career with SF, to say his passing game production was modest would be an understatement. The Falcons can potentially come up with an interesting scheme and occasionally surprise with Woerner as the protagonist. This, of course, is a bit speculative.
Charlie Woerner’s Fantasy Potential
Woerner’s fantasy value unfortunately doesn´t look amazing because he is mainly a blocking TE, and fantasy doesn´t really take blockers into account. However, with a new scheme and a new team, he could be looking to establish a new role and get some pass-catching participation with a new QB Kirk Cousins joining the team. The relationship Woerner built could be a crucial factor in his fantasy expectations.
While his fantasy upside might be limited due to his role behind Pitts and his primary focus on blocking, there’s always a chance for surprises in the NFL.
Charlie Woerner 2022 and 2023 Production
Charlie Woerner has been a very consistent player but has seen little to no action throughout his career. According to ProFootballReference, in 2022, he did not produce a single yard of offense despite playing all 17 games for the 49ers. In 2023, he had 3 catches for 32 yards.
While these stats are not worth spending a pick on a player. This year with a new HC, scheme and QB Woerners´use could make a shift. However, most likely he will remain a key feature in the blocking game.
Final Thoughts
Charlie Woerner’s role as TE2 behind Kyle Pitts might limit his production. In addition with his main strength being blocking and by having historically small production, not much can be expected from Woerner. And most certainly spending a pick on him doesnñt look like a wise choice. However, the unpredictability of the NFL means there’s always a chance for unexpected developments. So keep an eye on how the Falcons use him.
