CJ Cup Byron Nelson Fantasy Picks for a Weak Field

Byron Nelson

Welcome to ‘Byron Nelson Fantasy Picks,’ all of you fantasy golf fanatics and PGA Tour die-hards. It is reasonable to guess that we are the only ones who seem to give a hoot about this once-prestigious tournament. Formerly an afterthought tourney in the fall, ‘The CJ Cup’ is joining forces with an event that was once of the most well-known on tour. The more recently downgraded, Byron Nelson Classic.

Not surprisingly, it’s a weaker field than in years past. On a positive note, that makes Byron Nelson’s fantasy picks a little easier to deliberate. In theory, anyway. Betting odds are mentioned here to help you pick a winner if you’re going that route. And we’ll spend time angling toward your Thursday game with tips on how you can put together a squad with a group of Byron Nelson fantasy picks that maximize your budget and win you some money.

I’ll make a pick to win at the end. How can I not?

The Favorite: Byron Nelson Fantasy Picks

Given his golden boy status as Texas’ favorite golf son since Byron Nelson himself, Jordan Spieth is the face of the namesake’s tournament, even if he won’t be in every other commercial now that AT&T dropped their sponsorship of the event. He’s also the betting favorite, going off at 12-1. That doesn’t mean you want him anchoring your squad, however. He’s the most expensive and admittedly playing at less than 100% with a bad wrist.

Jason Day is next with 18-1 odds. There hasn’t been any coverage of an injury, but this is Jason Day we’re talking about. He hasn’t been right for years. He’s up here because of his name and that he’s the defending champ. At +2200 to win, Will Zalatoris was the third favorite but just withdrew with back pain. More injuries. Other golfers at the top of the Byron Nelson odds list are Si Woo Kim at 22-1, then Sungjae Im, Alex Noren, and Adam Scott, all at 25-1.

Not exactly a murderer’s row of top flight golf talent this week. Let’s dive a little deeper.

Best Value: Byron Nelson Fantasy Picks

Stephan Jaeger, the former Korn Ferry Tour darling, became a PGA Tour winner just a month ago at another Texas tournament, The Texas Children’s Houston Open. He was clutch down the stretch, went low and putted out of his mind. All things this week’s winner will most likely do.

Beau Hossler, the former Texas Longhorn, loves playing in Texas. He’s known for crushing drives and making a lot of birdies. He’s taken a little something off his fastball this year in hopes of getting a little more accuracy and making a few fewer bogeys. The results have been mixed, but he knows the course well and how to make a lot of birdies.

Speaking of long drivers, Luke List was in contention last week at the Zurich Classic and is a bargain to start the week, both in fantasy and the sportsbooks. And speaking of last week, a couple of other contenders from last week may continue riding their hot hands if you’re looking to pair Spieth or Day with an affordable player. Zac Blair and Ryan Brehm each finished top five, a season-best for each unheralded player.

Could it behoove a fantasy player such as yourself to ride the hot hand?

Stephan Jaeger. Since winning the Houston Open, he missed the cut at his first Masters, understandable. Then he was positioned around the top ten at the RBC Heritage headed into the final round before shooting +2 in the final round to fall back to T18. He makes birdies in bunches, so this type of event suits him. On a course with wide open fairways, his stellar approach game will thrive because there will be plenty of opportunities. If the putter gets hot, he’ll have his second Texas win in just over a month come Sunday.
