Brock Purdy is one of the most underrated players in the NFL. Following being selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, he has created one of the most unique careers in NFL history. After falling short of capturing the final goal, the Super Bowl, consecutive years, Purdy and the 49ers will be entering the 2024 NFL season with a vengeance.
While Purdy has had some struggles thus far in his career, he has been one of the most consistent and successful quarterbacks in football. Both of these things are exactly what you want in a fantasy football player. Though Purdy doesn’t bring the explosive fireworks that quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen bring, he could easily finish with them at the top of fantasy rankings and results at the end of the season.
With nearly entire of one of the most stacked rosters of all time returning to San Francisco and more experience, can Brock Purdy finally have the year 49er and fantasy fans have been waiting for?
Brock Purdy Fantasy Upside
On the upside, Brock Purdy could be the QB1 of fantasy football. Though he does not bring the run game like Lamar Jackson or Jalen Hurts, Purdy undoubtedly has the same type of ceiling. With weapons like George Kittle, Christian McCaffery, Deebo Samuel, and Brandon Aiyuk, depending on if he gets traded, the 49ers have the best offense in the NFL, on paper. While the offense has found success in the past, they will have to climb the ladder and reprove themselves.
Some other upsides to look for are the rest of the team, starting with the defense and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan. Though Shanahan has never won a Super Bowl, he is consistently knocking on the door. With his genius playcalling and veteran experience, he has helped Purdy translate and transform his game to the professional level. With yet another year of experience working together, the duo should explode back onto the scene like they never have before.
On the defensive side, the San Francisco unit continues to be one of the most feared, talented, and unstoppable groups in the NFL. With all of these factoring in, Purdy should have an easy time recreating the success of the past and making an even bigger name for himself.
Brock Purdy Fantasy Downside
On the downside, Brock Purdy could finish in the middle of the pack or regress. Though it will be hard not to find success in his circumstances, it is possible and it could be what happens to him this season. With the NFL constantly getting more talented players and the NFC and NFC West improving over the years, it gets harder to dominate and win. While winning does not factor into fantasy production statistically, it affects how players approach the game and perform.
Another downside to watch is the success Purdy and the 49ers have found over the past few seasons. It is hard enough to find success in a league like the NFL, but now opposing teams will have special game plans and have made off-season moves in hopes of knocking off one of the top dawgs.
It is not uncommon for a team to find success one season and follow it the next year with disappointment. While that is unlikely to happen to Purdy and the 49ers, superstitious or cautious fans may have a hard time taking a big chance on him in fantasy drafts.
The overall draft projection for Brock Purdy is mid to early rounds depending on the format. With the ceiling of being fantasy’s MVP and the risk of finishing middle of the pack, it should be a no-brainer to want Purdy on your squad this season.
