Brian Robinson Jr. Dynasty Outlook 2024

brian robinson

Brian Robinson Jr. was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft out of the University of Alabama. Before the start of the season, it looked as if Robinson would be the Commanders’ new RB1.

Unfortunately, before the season started on August 28th, Robinson was shot during a robbery which would lead to him missing the first four games of the season. He made his debut in week 5 that year but the Commanders eased him into the starting role as weeks went on.

At the start of the 2023 season, Brian Robinson was listed as the starter on the depth chart but shared snaps with Antonio Gibson. In 2024, he is set to be the lead back for Washington.

Down but Not Out for Brian Robinson Jr.

Unfortunately for the people who drafted Brian Robinson, the 2023 Commanders were frequently losing to their opponents which led to the game script being unfriendly to running the football. Robinson finished the 2023 campaign with 733 rushing yards with 5 touchdowns, with 368 receiving yards and an additional 4 touchdowns through the air.

New Commanders in Town

After the 2023 season, the Commanders front office decided it was time to bring in some new faces and overhaul the operation. Brian Robinson is one of the only remaining pieces from the former regime. Dan Quinn was brought in to be the new head coach, bringing with him Kliff Kingsbury to be the offensive coordinator and even drafted a new franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels.

Kingsbury being the offensive coordinator sounds like good news for the Commanders RB1 if it weren’t for the team bringing in some competition for touches in the form of 29-year-old running back Austin Ekeler. The Commanders signed Ekeler to a 2-year $8,430,000 contract. Even though Robinson is still listed first on the depth chart, the talented Ekeler is sure to eat into Robinson’s touches and be more of a committee approach in Washington.

Washington’s Running Back Injury History

Brian Robinson has yet to rush for over 750 yards in a season and typically isn’t featured much in the passing game which is limiting his upside. The good news is when Robinson does get to touch the ball he is very efficient and makes the most of his usage.

Ekeler dealt with an ankle injury last season resulting in him missing a few weeks and he wasn’t as efficient as we were used to him being when he got back to playing. As long as Ekeler stays healthy he figures to play more of the passing downs while Robinson is used as the ground and pound back.

Robinson’s Dynasty Fantasy Value

Kliff Kingsbury’s explosive offense should be a great fit for the thunder-and-lightning style duo of Robinson and Ekeler. One would also think it to be wise of Kingsbury to lean on the running game with the veteran backs and take some of the pressure off of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels while he adjusts to the fast pace of play in the NFL.

If given enough opportunities Brian Robinson could easily have the best season of his career but if Ekeler looks like his former self Washington could ride the hot hand at running back and that could eat into Robinson’s workload.

Final Thoughts on Robinson

If you have Brian Robinson in dynasty leagues, he is a solid option for an RB2 for your dynasty team. Robinson probably won’t have many weeks where his performance wins you your matchup but he should have a steady season week in and week out providing a nice floor.

If Ekeler struggles to stay healthy or isn’t as efficient as he used to be then this could all change Robinson’s value and rocket him into RB1 conversation which would be the best-case scenario for Robinson owners.

I wouldn’t try trading for him if you don’t currently have him unless the team that does have him is pessimistic about his value with the Ekeler signing, in this case, if you have the opportunity to buy low on him I would try and do that before the season begins. Brian Robinson will be more valuable in standard scoring than in PPR scoring due to his limited usage in the passing game. Always keep your scoring format in mind when evaluating trade value.
