Braves vs Rockies Start/Sit 9-5-24

The Braves look for the series sweep from the Rockies tonight after winning game two 5-2 yesterday. Reynaldo Lopez takes the mound against Austin Gomber tonight as the Rockies try to salvage this trip to Atlanta with a win. Colorado has an uphill battle ahead of them tonight but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some impactful fantasy implications.

Sam Hilliard, OF, Colorado Rockies

Hilliard is on a four-game hitting streak and has been batting .286 in the past thirty days. Add to that the fact that he is hitting .750 in his career against Atlanta and that makes him a must-start if he’s on your fantasy team.

Charlie Blackmon, DH, Colorado Rockies

Blackmon went to Georgia Tech in Atlanta and appears to feel at home when playing the Braves as he’s hit .455 at the plate against them in his career. Charlie didn’t get the start in game 1 but got two hits leading off in game 2. He is showing his age a little this season only batting .250 but is a must-start when playing Atlanta.

Marcell Ozuna, DH, Atlanta Braves

Ozuna has 10 hits in his at 7 games. While he is not providing the same power he was earlier in the season he is keeping his average above .300 and could go on a power binge at any time. Keep starting Ozuna and reap the rewards of drafting him on his way to the NL Triple Crown.

Braves vs Rockies Fantasy Sits

Luke Williams, 2B, Atlanta Braves

The Braves seem to be cursed at second base this season, losing everyday second baseman Ozzie Albies and his replacement Whit Merrifield. Merrifield may not be out long after being hit in the head by a fastball Tuesday night, but Luke Williams shouldn’t be started in your fantasy lineup if you were relying on Merrifiled. Williams is only batting.172 on the season and provides no power at the plate.

Ezequiel Tovar, SS, Colorado Rockies

Tovar isn’t having a bad year at the plate but has been on a bit of a cold streak the past few games. He is only batting .174 in the past week and has only two hits in his past eighteen plate appearances including going 0-4 last night. He never faced Reynaldo Lopez but is only batting .158 against the Braves in his career so you should steer clear of him in fantasy for the series finale.

Braves vs Rockies Pitching Matchup

Reynaldo Lopez RHP (8-4, 2.00 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 125 Ks, 121.2 IP) vs Austin Gomber LHP (4-10, 4.9 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 102 Ks, 144 IP)

Lopez continues his great season with his last appearances being quality starts. Most of this Rockies lineup has never faced Lopez which usually works to the pitchers’ advantage. While there is plenty of tape from this season on how to approach an at-bat against the Braves righty, this inexperienced Colorado lineup has a tall task in front of them on the road against a Braves team still fighting for a playoff spot.

Gomber is 1-4 in his last five starts. At first glance, his record would tell you that he’s having a bad season and the Braves should tee off on him fairly easily. In reality, he has had three quality starts in his past four appearances but the Rockies lineup has struggled to give him run support to help him get the wins. Gomber could easily go 6-7 innings allowing minimal damage if the Braves lineup struggles to hit tonight. If you play in a quality start league and need strikeouts he is a viable streaming option.
