The Braves took the series opener against the Rockies in Atlanta Tuesday night 3-0. Braves ace Chris Sale was in peak form going seven innings while striking out nine batters and allowing no runs. Can the Braves continue to take advantage of the struggling Rockies to further their pursuit of a spot in the playoffs, or will Colorado be able to knock around Charlie Morton tonight and even the series?
Braves vs Rockies Fantasy Starts
Brendan Rodgers, 2B, Colorado Rockies
Rodgers has been one of the few bright spots in a dim 2024 campaign for the Rockies. He is batting .400 in the past week and .305 in the past month including going 2-4 at the plate against the Braves last night. Charlie Morton takes the mound for the Braves tonight, which means you should be starting Rodgers in your fantasy lineup. Rodgers is 3-6 off Morton in his career with one home run and four runs batted in.
Gio Urshela, 3B, Atlanta Braves
Urshela remains hot at the plate batting .290 the past month, including going 2-3 last night. He has been on fire since joining the Braves and is on a 13-game hitting streak. He doesn’t provide much in the way of power but if he keeps getting on base with this consistency he deserves a spot in your starting lineup until he starts to cool off.
Michael Harris II, OF, Atlanta Braves
Harris went 2-3 in the series opener against Colorado last night. While he still hasn’t shown as much consistency at the plate as you’d like, you’re likely starting him in your lineup hoping that the 2-3 last night will spark a hot streak for the Braves young center fielder.
Braves vs Rockies Fantasy Sits
Michael Toglia, 1B, Colorado Rockies
Toglia has given Colorado some power this year but has struggled with average only batting .217 so far. He is only hitting .214 against right-handed pitchers and while Braves righty Charlie Morton is past his prime, he can still put together a good outing. Toglia is only batting .227 in the past week and .205 in the past 15 days with only two home runs in the past month. You’ll likely have better options for power and average available for this matchup.
Jorge Soler, OF, Atlanta Braves
Soler has been struggling since being acquired by the Braves at the trade deadline. He is only hitting .100 in the past seven days and .056 in the past two weeks. Jorge may be on the verge of getting benched considering he is the weakest outfield option for the Braves defensively, if he continues this cold streak.
Braves vs Rockies Pitching Matchup
Charlie Morton RHP (7-7, 4.26 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 140 Ks, 137.1 IP) vs Bradley Blalock RHP (1-1, 4.98 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 14 Ks, 21.2 IP)
Charlie Morton continues to be a steady innings eater for the Braves rotation. The Braves are 3-1 in Morton’s last four starts, with Charlie not allowing more than three runs in any of the starts. While he is not an ideal starting option if you need wins, he may be a streaming option for this matchup alone. The Rockies are a struggling team and just got shut out against Sale last night. Morton is no Chris Sale, but he could go 5-6 innings with 6 Ks and get you a win.
Blalock has been mediocre since being traded for from the Brewers. The Rockies have gone 2-2 in his four starts since being acquired, while Blalock has failed to finish the sixth inning in any of his starts. The Braves are at home and getting hot which doesn’t bode well for a rookie pitcher who has been known to struggle at times.
