Bo Nix was the most polarizing quarterback prospect in the 2024 NFL draft. There was a lot of debate on how good he would be at the NFL level. That shows how teams drafted the quarterback position and that Nix went after Drake Maye, Michael Penix, and JJ McCarthy.
Nix still went in the first round but was the last guy drafted at the position and went outside the top 10 to the Denver Broncos with the 12th overall pick.
From Auburn to Oregon
Perhaps people didn’t know what to make of Bo Nix because of the stark contrasts in his production between his first three years at The University of Auburn and his last two years at The University of Oregon.
Is Oregon’s explosive offensive style of play to thank for Nix’s increased production, compared to Auburn’s conservative defense first play calling? Could it just be a young quarterback maturing and getting better with more reps?
One thing for certain is that it helped Bo Nix’s career get out of his father’s shadow, who was also a quarterback at Auburn from 1992 to 1995. He threw for 851 more yards, 35 more touchdowns, and 6 fewer interceptions in one less season at Oregon.
Dumpster Fire in Denver
Before the beginning of the 2023 season, the Denver Broncos seemed to make all the right moves. They traded for Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson after continuing to bust at drafting the position. They brought offensive genius head coach Sean Payton out of retirement to lead the new-look Broncos to victory.
All that optimism came to a screeching halt as the team started the season 1-5 with one of those losses coming after giving up 70 points to the Miami Dolphins. The Broncos seemed to start to even things out down the stretch going 6-3 after the slow start. That didn’t stop Payton from benching Wilson in week 17 in favor of Jarrett Stidham, seemingly confirming the rumors that there was trouble in paradise between the quarterback and head coach.
In addition to drafting Bo Nix, the Broncos also traded for Zach Wilson from the Jets, making it unclear what their plans are for the quarterback position moving forward. While Zach Wilson has the most starting experience on the Broncos, acquiring him in late April felt more like a move for depth at the position.
While Payton has not yet named a starting quarterback, all signs seem to point to Nix being the starter for week one. In the first pre-season game for the Broncos, Bo Nix completed 15 passes out of 21 attempts for 125 yards and a touchdown. Payton said that he likes what he is seeing from Nix, but there’s still more to clean up in the rookie quarterbacks game.
Dynasty Value for Bo Nix
On the surface, Nix seems to have the most questions surrounding his fantasy football value of all the quarterbacks taken in the first round. While it is yet to be determined if Nix will start this season for Denver or not, the good news for anyone who drafted Bo Nix in a dynasty league is that he is the only one whose contract is not up at the end of the season.
Stidham signed a 2-year $10 million deal before the 2023 season, which only runs through the end of this year. The Broncos traded for Wilson from the Jets and declined his fifth-year option, effectively making him a one-year rental piece with his contract up at the end of the season barring any extensions.
While it is yet to be seen what we are getting from any of the rookie quarterbacks, Bo Nix may be the quarterback you want outside of the top 2 quarterbacks taken in the draft. That includes Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels.
There are a lot of holes in the Patriots offense and they are also breaking in a first-time head coach this season, along with Drake Maye. JJ McCarthy just had season-ending surgery so we won’t see him until next season at the earliest. Michael Penix Jr. was drafted to be the heir apparent to Kirk Cousins, who just signed a four-year deal with Atlanta.
If Sean Payton and his offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi can recapture some of the offensive magic they had in New Orleans with Drew Brees, Bo Nix may be a viable fantasy quarterback for years to come. While there is a wide range of outcomes, that sentiment rings true for all rookie quarterbacks.
Production isn’t guaranteed from anyone coming into the league but by taking a chance on Bo Nix, you may be getting a starting QB for your dynasty league. This would be for a fraction of the price you would have had to pay for Williams or Daniels, allowing you to spend that draft capital on another position of need for your team.
