Where to Watch: MLB.TV

The Baltimore Orioles will try to get their season back on track against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field. Things were rough for the Orioles this weekend. They fired their manager and got swept by the Washington Nationals. Things weren’t much better for the Brewers. While they were able to pick up a series finale win against the red-hot Minnesota Twins, their offense went two full games without a run. This is a classic something’s got to give matchup.

Key Stats

Baltimore Orioles

If there’s been a bright spot for the Baltimore Orioles, it’s been the play of Jackson Holiday. In the past seven games, he is slashing .321/.345/.607 with two doubles, two home runs, and five RBIs. He has only struck out twice over the past week, something you love to see out of a young player. The Orioles have lived on the long ball, but no one is getting on base to make the long ball mean anything.

Right-hander Dean Kremer takes the mound, trying to get the Orioles back on track. While hitting has certainly been an issue, the pitching has been the main problem for this team. In his last start against the Minnesota Twins, he pitched 5.2 innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. After a horrible end to the month of April, this month has been better. In three starts, he has thrown 19.2 innings, giving up 13 hits, six earned runs, while striking out 14 batters. There is so little room for error because of the struggles of the offense.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers ran into the buzzsaw that is the Minnesota Twins and were honestly lucky to only lose two out of three. One of the big reasons for their offensive struggles is the play of young superstar Jackson Chourio. Over the past seven games, he is slashing an abysmal .120/.154/.160, with only one extra base hit and nine strikeouts. The Brewers were hoping to see a year-two leap, and it hasn’t been there in the past week.

Right-hander Quinn Priester takes the mound on Monday for the Milwaukee Brewers. In his last start against the Cleveland Guardians, he threw 5.0 innings, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out three. Priester has struggled with control this month. In 14.1 innings pitched in the month of May, he has walked nine batters, leading to him being pulled in the fifth or sixth inning.

Prediction

These types of matchups are always tough to pick. Both pitchers have had their share of issues, and the hitting lineups have been inconsistent across the board. I’m leaning toward Milwaukee for two reasons. One, when in doubt, bet the home team. Two, the Brewers are among the league leaders in steals, whereas the Orioles are near the bottom. Milwaukee can manufacture runs even if they are not getting hits. Baltimore looks down bad, and the losing streak continues tonight.
