107 Points in 81 games, the Maple Leafs once again fell short losing in the 1st Round in 7 games to the Boston Bruins. After the season, Auston Matthews was named the 26th Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs as John Tavares was removed as the C to give it to Matthews.
Auston Matthew’s Career So Far
Auston Matthews was drafted 1st overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Matthews absolutely exploded onto the scene in the NHL, putting up 4 goals in his first-ever NHL game vs the Ottawa Senators.
In 2017, Auston Matthews was selected for the All-Star Game. He finished the year with 40 goals, the 2nd-most in the NHL. The most goals in Maple Leaf’s history for a rookie. The Maple Leafs made the playoffs for the first time since 2004 but lost in the 1st round to the Washington Capitals. Auston Matthews was awarded the Calder Trophy. For winning the Rookie of the Year, he got 164 of the 167 1st place votes.
In 2018, he once again made the All-Star Game, and once again the Maple Leafs made the playoffs but fell to the Boston Bruins in 7 games.
In 2019, Matthews signed a new 5-year, $58.17 million contract with Toronto worth an average annual value of $11.634 million, which kicked in during the 2019-20 season. At the start of the 2019-20 season, Auston Matthews was named an Alternate Captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In 21-22, Auston Matthews put up 60 goals for the first time in his NHL career. Also, this is the first time he’s put up 100+ points in his career where he had 106. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy after this phenomenal season for the first time.
In 2023, Auston Matthews signed a 4 year, $53,000,000 contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. This includes a $49,650,000 signing bonus, $53,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $13,250,000.
