Following a great Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo for the ATP, which saw Carlos Alcaraz hoist the trophy. Before the men play back-to-back Masters 1000s, there are two 500-level events with many of the top players in action. Of the two, Barcelona has the more stacked field, which includes the recent Monte-Carlo Champ. 500-level events are still very important.
Casper Ruud, who is the second seed, is the defending champion, and with six top 15 players in the field, it should be another fascinating week of clay-court tennis to see who can grab the momentum leading into these two important 1000-level events.
Jaume Munar(-130) vs. Frances Tiafoe (+106)–> Prediction: Munar
This is one that’s tough for me to write up because the whole Tennis world, but mostly American Tennis fans, have been waiting for Tiafoe to take that next step. While he plays amazingly at the U.S. Open every year, that’s the one tournament he plays at an extremely high level year after year. Tiafoe does well on the clay in the 250 level events in the States, but he struggles once he comes over to Europe. Munar has played some great tennis this year, and clay is his best surface. This feels like a simple pick to take Munar.
Arthur Fils(-410) vs. Pablo Carreno Busta(+300)–> Prediction: Fils
This is a fascinating first-round match as the young Frenchman has been the most consistent player on tour, as he has made it to the quarterfinals of the last three Masters 1000 events. While Carreno Busta had been a consistent force in the sport, injuries have hurt his career the last three years. Fils is the player in way better form and on the rise, while you don’t know what you’re getting from the Spaniard. Plus, he hasn’t been in top form in years. Fils is an easy pick to move on here.
Karen Khachanov(-178) vs. Cam Norries(+146)–> Prediction: Norrie
This is the toughest match to predict on Tuesday, as both players have had some great career results on Clay, but both aren’t in the best of form. Khachanov has been in better form, but I think the upset is the way to go. Norrie’s only good results over the last couple of seasons have been on the clay. Norrie needs some positive results soon, and I think this win could jump-start a minor resurgence. On any other surface, I wouldn’t pick the Burt, but because of the tournament, I am going with Norrie.
Conclusion on ATP
To wrap things up, Barcelona has always been a prestigious event, and with so many top clay court players in action, it gives us another look at who will be the favorites to win the second major of the year. We are also in a tennis world where there are no easy matches for any player, so upsets are happening at such a high clip. On a surface like clay, it’s rare for the top clay court players to falter. Alcaraz will be once again the heavy favorite, but players like Ruud and Rublev are excellent on the dirt and will want to get a great result as well.
