Adonai Mitchell is one of those underrated receivers who came into this 2024 draft, and he fell a few spots than expected because a lot of people had him going late first round or early second round in the 2024 draft, but he fell to the middle of the second round. The former Georgia Bulldog and Texas Longhorn receiver have the makeup of being a surprise factor in 2024 like Puka Nucua was in 2023. The parallels between Mitchell and Nucua are very similar. Both are likely going to be the second option in their offenses this year because of their dynamic ability to get open; they both had good college careers.

However, the first hurdle for Mitchell is Anthony Richardson as a quarterback because he is unproven, unlike Matthew Stafford. But I believe Richardson showed enough when he was playing in 2023 before the shoulder injury that he could be a good quarterback in this league, especially with Shane Steichen as the offensive mastermind. Also, the amount of targets early on is the biggest hurdle, but I believe the big play ability will get him close to Nucua numbers.

Adonai Mitchell had the most productive season of his college career at the University of Texas in 2023, with 55 catches for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns. Fantasy Pros had Mitchell at a 32% dominator rating in 2023. The skills were showcased to perfection in 2023, especially when it came to the ability to stretch the field.
The Colts have found an interesting stud of a prospect in Mitchell deep down because he could compliment Michael Pittman Jr and Josh Downs really well this season, which is why people might hesitate to call him a Nucua type of impact, but let’s look at the 2024 projections to see why it could be possible that Mitchell could have a Nucua impact out of nowhere.

Fantasy Pros has Adonai Mitchell as the WR 66 in their ECR ranking, with the projection of 46 receptions for 629 yards and four touchdowns for a total of 129 fantasy points in 2024. His weekly production may be limited, but the big play ability is a huge selling point for Mitchell, and that’s what people are looking for in terms of being the next Nucua at first because that’s how Nucua got his start in 2023, as he was the big play guy taking a lot of volume early in 2023 and making crucial play after crucial play.
ESPN’s projections for Adonai Mitchell are around the same lines as Fantasy Pros, ESPN has Mitchell achieving 46 receptions for 643 yards and three touchdowns for 130.03 fantasy points putting him as ESPN’s WR 60 this season.
Final Thoughts
This is the riskiest play I’m probably going to pitch for 2024, and that’s because I believe in this kid’s abilities to not only create separation on the deep routes but have the ability to track the ball into the hands like Nucua did most of the year last season along with running the Robert Woods short routes and getting the RAC yardage. Adonai Mitchell has the potential to be a DeSean Jackson-type player, especially with Richardson’s arm, and that could be the springboard that gets him off the wavier wires after Week 1 like Nucua was last season. Keep an eye on AD Mitchell over the course of 2024.
