From West Columbia, Texas, Cam Ward was an unranked and unrated prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings. Out of high school, Ward enrolled at Incarnate Word after only receiving scholarship offers from them and Texas Southern. After two highly successful seasons at Incarnate Word, Ward transferred to Washington State for two seasons. Ward initially declared for the 2024 NFL Draft but decided to transfer to Miami instead.
Coming into the 2024 season, Ward had completed 1210 of 1875 career passes for 13,874 yards with 119 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in his four-year career. As a freshman in 2020 at Incarnate Word, Ward won the Jerry Rice Award, which is awarded to the FCS top freshman player. During the COVID-shortened season, he threw for 2,260 yards and 24 touchdowns in six games. His sophomore season was even more prolific, as he threw for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns while winning the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year Award.
After that season, Cam Ward transferred to the FBS level to play for Washington State. In his two seasons in Pullman, Washington, Ward threw for 6,966 yards and 48 touchdowns, while completing 65.5% of his passes. In order to maximize his draft stock and take advantage of NIL opportunities, Ward transferred to Miami for his final season of eligibility.
Cam Ward as a Player
Ward can make all of the necessary throws to anywhere on the field. Although his arm strength isn’t elite, he has enough to get the ball where he wants to. He can be a little sloppy with his footwork and isn’t overly experienced in the pocket. However, he is highly competent with his scrambling and his ability to work out of structure.
He possesses decent accuracy overall, but he possesses great anticipation for his receivers downfield.
Cam Ward shows great flexibility and agility, allowing him to avoid pressure within the pocket. His playmaking includes the ability to vary touch and velocity. He gets the ball out quickly and can make split-second decisions, which allows him to be effective with off-platform throws.
An athletic quarterback who is a threat to leave the pocket and gain positive yardage at any time, Cam Ward possesses very good vision, balance, elusiveness, speed, and power as a runner. He has the instinct to make plays when forced to improvise and can make off-platform throws when needed. He has a bit of a gunslinger mentality, so turnovers can happen due to his supreme confidence in his playmaking and arm talent.
Devy Outlook
Prior to this season, Ward was a bit of an NFL Draft afterthought. Now, however, he is a frontrunner for the 2024 Heisman Trophy award and a probable second-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. I have him ranked as the overall QB9 in Devy and the QB6 for the 2025 NFL Draft.
With the type of NFL Draft capital I’m expecting Cam Ward to receive, he would be a projected franchise Quarterback for whatever team drafts him. He has the potential to be a QB3 as a rookie and mid-back end QB2 in Dynasty leagues as he develops in the NFL. As far as NFL comparisons, I see a lot of Donovan McNabb in Cam Ward. He can make every throw, he can throw off-platform, and is mobile enough to make a big impact with his legs.
