Week One of the college football season is in the books and many freshmen across the country put on a show with their big performances. Whether true freshmen or redshirt freshmen, the young guys showed they belong on your team, in your lineup, or at least on your radar.
These freshmen quarterbacks played big parts in their team’s successes over the weekend, and hopefully, they have a place on your rosters. It’s likely one or two are already rostered, as they should have been. However, there are always hidden gems to unearth…especially in two QB or Superflex leagues.
Nico Iamaleava, Quarterback, Tennessee Volunteers
100% owned in CFF leagues, so you won’t be able to snag him off waivers, Nico Iamaleava lived up to the massive hype on Saturday. He only played the first half due to the huge lead Tennessee had built against Chattanooga, but he still put up big numbers. In the two quarters he played, Iamaleava threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns on 22-28 passing. His first big test will come against North Carolina State on Saturday in Charlotte.
Gio Lopez, Quarterback, South Alabama Jaguars
Criminally under-owned at 23%, South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez is poised to have a big season for the Jaguars. In the 52-38 loss to North Texas, Lopez threw for 432 yards and three touchdowns on 26-49 passing. He also ran for 62 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. South Alabama travels to Ohio on Saturday, and Lopez should continue to put up great fantasy points. I highly recommend you pick him up if he’s available in your leagues.
Kirk Francis, Quarterback, Tulsa Golden Hurricanes
A bit of a surprise with Cardell Williams and Cooper Legas on the roster, Kirk Francis was named the starter for week one. With his 299 yard, four touchdown performance, he will likely continue to be the Tulsa starter moving forward. Francis will head to Arkansas State on Saturday before taking on Oklahoma State next week. At 4% owned, he is worth a speculative add in deeper leagues and is definitely worth monitoring for future use.
Eli Holstein, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Panthers
A former four star Alabama signee, Eli Holstein transferred to Pitt after the 2023 season. He was recently named the starting quarterback for the Panthers late in fall camp and then proceeded to put up 336 yards and three touchdowns in a 55-24 win against Kent State. Pittsburgh plays at Cincinnati on Saturday, in what should be a bigger test for Holstein. 11% rostered and likely to climb higher than that, Holstein should be monitored moving forward. I recommend seeing how he plays against better competition before adding.
