In this space, I’m going to help you to identify potential impact additions in fantasy baseball leagues. I’ll make an effort to tailor this column to all league sizes, recommending players that could be available in shallow, deeper and AL- or NL-only formats.
The time to grind is now. If you are in striking distance in your fantasy league, you must keep your foot on the gas pedal over the final seven weeks of the season. While others may have turned their attention to fantasy football, there are plenty of points to be gained in the standings.
Impact Fantasy Addition: Zebby Matthews
If you’ve been paying attention and following along here, we have had a ton of success in this space, most recently with Dylan Crews socking his first dinger of the season on Wednesday evening against Carlos Rodon and the Yankees and recent feature Bowden Francis dominating yet again in Thursday’s victory over the Red Sox.
For some reason, fantasy managers in shallower formats still aren’t taking Twins’ rookie right-hander Zebby Matthews seriously. He’s only rostered in 23 percent of all Yahoo leagues at the moment. That’s a mistake, and it needs to be corrected.
Matthews has been terrific through his first three starts with the Twins, compiling a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 13/2 K/BB across 15 innings of work. He’s set to do battle against Jose Berrios and the Blue Jays on Saturday and makes for an outstanding streaming option.
Not only does he have solid win equity for that start and a strong likelihood to record a handful of strikeouts, but his impeccable command means that he should deliver strong ratios as well — especially WHIP.
The 24-year-old hurler issued a grand total of seven walks across 97 innings in 18 minor league appearances this year and has walked only two batters through his first three starts in the big-leagues. For my gamblers out there, the over/under line on Matthews’ walks on Saturday is likely to be set at 1.5 again, and hammering the under (even at -150 or so) is a very strong play.
Impact Fantasy Addition: Trevor Larnach

Trevor Larnach is another player on the Twins’ that’s widely available in fantasy leagues and really shouldn’t be. The 27-year-old outfielder has been sizzling at the dish over his last 10 games, slashing .371/.389/.743 with three homers and 10 RBI in just 36 plate appearances.
He’s locked into the second spot in the Twins lineup whenever they square off against right-handed pitching, and Larnach just so happens to be lined up to face a trio of right-handers over the weekend. Once again, he’s not the type of player that’s going to carry a fantasy team to a title over the final four-plus weeks of the season, but he can be a viable contributor — especially in deeper leagues.
