Alexander Mattison 2024 Fantasy Outlook

Las Vegas Raiders Running back Alexander Mattison

Alexander Mattison enters his sixth season in the NFL, and he finds himself outside of Minnesota for the first time in his career. The Boise St. alum begins the season on a new offense in Las Vegas under new head coach Antonio Pierce.

Mattison signed a $2 million contract for one season to play for the Raiders. The former Minnesota Viking has spent time as a backup before, but the starting running back position in Las Vegas may be up in the air.

Alexander Mattison 2022 and 2023 Stats

Alexander Mattison

Last season, Mattison was the full-time starter for the first time in his career. Fantasy Pros had Mattison as the RB43 last season, totaling 700 rushing yards on 180 carries, 192 receiving yards on 30 targets, and 3 scores through the air. Mattison had a very up-and-down season last year, he scored double-digit fantasy points in six of the first nine weeks, then saw a dramatic drop-off.

Mattison did not score more than 8.3 fantasy points in a game after week 9, due to Ty Chandler seeing reps as the starter. In 2022, Mattison totaled 283 rushing yards but saw the endzone five times, so he has proven he can be useful as a goal-line back.

Alexander Mattison 2024 Fantasy Projections

Alexander Mattison is projected as the RB50 by FanDuel, which is a step down from last season as the RB37. ProFootballNetwork has Mattison listed as the RB66 with an average ADP of 253. With Zamir White taking the role as starting running back on the depth chart this leaves questions about Mattison’s role.

Zamir White has never been a starting running back (unless Josh Jacobs was injured) in his three years in the NFL, but he has been with the Raiders his whole career, so he has priority. The Raiders have Mattison listed as RB2 on the depth chart, but Zamir White is not known for his receiving abilities. Early on, we may see Zamir White get first and second down touches with Mattison coming in as the third down back.

Final Thoughts

Alexander Mattison is in a weird situation in Las Vegas, as he currently sits at RB2 on the depth chart, but the starter has not proven himself yet.  The best-case scenario for Mattison is Zamir White is not the starter anymore, and Mattison becomes the RB1 for the Raiders.

If Alexander Mattison can turn into who he was during the first nine weeks of last season, he can bring serious fantasy points to your team and will find himself getting future contracts. If Mattison turns into the running back he was in the latter half of last season, he will probably get benched.

Is Mattison worth drafting, probably not, but I would watch him in free agency. If Mattison starts getting touches and overtakes Zamir White as the starter, he could potentially be a good point scorer.
