This offseason, Gardner Minshew signed a 2-year $25 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. This puts Minshew on his third different team in as many years. In his sixth season in the league, the quarterback out of Washington State University knew he would have to compete for the starting job with the young Aiden O’Connell.
While the starting job is not guaranteed, Minshew has experience on his side. It makes sense why Minshew would choose a destination where he has a chance to start over just accepting a role as a backup like the previous 3 seasons.
Head coach Antonio Pierce has named Minshew the starting quarterback for week 1 over Aiden O’Connell. This is good news for Minshew’s dynasty stock but it is likely that he is on a short leash and could be benched if his play is inconsistent to start the season.
Look elsewhere for a quarterback to start the season in your fantasy lineup, until we have a few weeks sample size from Minshew to see how well he performs. Although Minshew is not an ideal candidate as a starting quarterback for most people’s football teams he can be a very useful asset for fantasy football teams looking to fill the position later in drafts.
Gardner Minshew 2024 Fantasy Outlook
Out of the five seasons Minshew has played he has only started more than 10 games twice. In his rookie season in Jacksonville, he started 12 games and threw for 3271 yards with 21 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. In 2023 he started 13 games and there for 3305 yards with 15 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, each season completing about 60 percent of his passes.
This will be the first season in his career that Minshew is named the starting quarterback to begin the season, if he can stay healthy it could be the biggest year of his career and could reshape how he is viewed by the league.
One of the biggest pros to Minshew signing with the Raiders is they have wide receiver Davante Adams on their roster. Minshew has not had a receiver of Adams caliber in the two seasons where he got the bulk of his starts.
Combine that with the fact that the Raiders let running back Josh Jacobs go this offseason, and they figure to be more pass-heavy to not overwork first-year starting running back Zamir White.
Add to that the fact that Las Vegas drafted superstar pass-catching tight end Brock Bowers in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft and still have Jakobi Meyers as their wide receiver two, Minshew has all the weapons he needs to have his most successful season yet.
Final Thoughts On Minshews Dynasty Value
If you need some depth at the quarterback position, you could probably get Minshew for a cheap price or he may even be available on the waiver wire to pick up without giving up anything of value. If you’re in a Superflex or 2 quarterback league and Minshew is still available you should grab him as soon as possible as he could be a starting-caliber quarterback for you most weeks.
If you find that you’re relying on Minshew every week then you should also make Aiden O’Connell a priority to acquire as well as he is the clear handcuff to Minshew if he were to get injured or Benched.
While Minshew is not a must-add in leagues where you can only start one quarterback, there is easily a path for him to end up being a viable bye-week fill-in for your regular starter or an “in case of emergency” player to stash on your bench or keep an eye on the waiver wire.
As long as he can keep the Raiders in a position to win games or at least be competitive, the fan-favorite quarterback should be on any fantasy player’s radar.
