Bucky Irving was one of the most electrifying playmakers in college football last season. The former Oregon Duck was picked with the 125th pick in the 4th round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The rookie notched a four-year, $4.75 million deal.
Although he will start behind RB1 Rachaad White on the depth chart to start his career, Irving has already turned heads during the offseason. Most anticipate him to make an immediate impact.
Bucky Irving Fantasy Upside
On the upside, Bucky Irving could start producing immediately this year. While rookie runningbacks usually take time to adjust, his athletic ability and speed can help him dominate instantly. Irving will likely play most of his time during the passing game because he is behind White on the depth chart. His unique ability allows him to be a dynamic player. His skills and abilities could potentially result in monster performances.
Another upside is the system he is in. White has been the main and only run attack that Tampa Bay has had over the last couple of seasons. Adding a dynamic playmaker like Irving to the mix will give both backs more freedom in the run-and-pass game. Baker Mayfield, Tampa’s QB1, will also have more freedom and options to get Irving the ball due to having the other talented weapons, such as Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, to draw defensive attention.
The upside for Irving this season is expected to be a good flex option. He has the talent to surpass the expectations, however, his youth and lack of experience could also hold him below. In sizeable leagues, he may be worth snagging at the end of the draft, but if not, he will be a solid waiver pickup when needed.
Bucky Irving’s Fantasy Downside
On the downside, Bucky Irving could have an average rookie year. The team plans on using him as soon as this year, but he is still a rookie and could experience struggle after struggle. Another downside is his spot on the depth chart. Starting, White will likely dominate the snap count as they ease Irving into his first year. Though he will see the field, it does not mean he will produce.
Another downside is his size. Irving found success effortlessly and often during his collegiate days, but the NFL is a different monster. While his size has never held him back before this season, we may see a drastic decrease in production.
With a draft projection of likely going undrafted, there is little to no risk of picking up Bucky Irving. With a dominant upside and a slightly usual downside, he should have no pressure to go out and start producing like he did in college. Will Bucky Irving demand owners get him off of waivers, or should we wait for the future to talk about his fantasy value?
