Joe Milton 2024 Fantasy Outlook

Joe Milton

During the 2024 NFL draft, the Patriots not only drafted their franchise QB in Drake Maye. But they also decided to take a gambit on  QB Joe Milton from Tennessee. During the offseason, a lot has been discussed about Joe Milton´s creativity, arm strength, and ingenuity as a player. Overall, he has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career and could be poised for some of his best years ahead with the Patriots, but it is also important to assess what exactly his role would be. This article will explore Joe Milton´s fantasy football outlook for the 2024 season.

Joe Milton’s journey to this point has been very interesting. He originally played football for the University of Michigan, it was there that Milton showed his arm strength and athleticism as a threat. His ability to make throws from various angles and distances was evident, but he struggled with consistency and decision-making.

After Michigan, Milton transferred to Tennessee, where his potential was often overshadowed by inconsistency. However, his physical tools were undeniable. Standing tall at 6’5and possessing a cannon for an arm, Milton can make deep throws that few quarterbacks can. Last year´s performance on the Orange Bowl, where he threw for 251 yards and 3TD helped him earn the event´s MVP and the Patriot´s eye.

NFL Transition

Now that the Patriots have drafted him, Milton’s performance will be shaped by the Pats offensive environment. The team’s offensive system, supporting cast, and coaching staff will play critical roles in determining his fantasy value. However, the immediate circumstance is that Milton was simply drafted to be a QB2 or QB3 behind Drake Maye, yet to be a functional backup for the Patriots as well.

You can expect Milton to be starting most of the preseason games for the Patriots, where he will be able to show what he is really made of and if he can potentially be in the competition for a starting role. But for the moment, that role belongs to Jacoby Brissett and the second choice would be Maye.

Furthermore, this particular situation may look eerily similar to another one for Patriots fans: 6th-round QB, with a chip on his shoulders and big talent, playing behind a 1st-round QB is a story Patriots fans know all too well. The question is, will he get his opportunity?

Joe Milton Fantasy Potential and Risks

Regarding fantasy football, Joe Milton’s potential is interesting. His arm strength and mobility give him the ability to produce a lot, offensively speaking (yards, TDs, INTs). In addition, his ability to make deep throws and scramble with his legs makes him a likely candidate for explosive plays.

However, there are also risks to consider. Milton has been inconsistent and his decision-making issues could translate into growing pains at the NFL level. Overall, ups and downs should be expected.

Final Thoughts

Joe Milton´s outlook for the 2024 season is quite an obvious one. Despite being an interesting player; with remarkable physical tools, and the potential for explosive plays. It is quite clear the starting role won´t be there for him unless a miracle happens. If it happens, fantasy players should consider Milton as a high-upside and high-downside option.

Due to starting role probabilities, we do not recommend you draft him early or at all. If he is still there in the final rounds and gets a chance to play, he could be worth the pick.
