Kirk Cousins 2024 Fantasy Outlook: Will The Former Vikings QB Thrive In Atlanta?

Kirk Cousins 2024 Fantasy Outlook

Kirk Cousins has one heck of an agent. After tearing his Achilles midway through the 2023 season, the quarterback got $100 million from the Atlanta Falcons. Everyone sees Cousins as a mid-tier quarterback, thanks to his playoff record. However he has been very productive in the past few years in fantasy football. Many are bullish on him this year as the Falcons are loaded with offensive weapons. Will Cousins shine with his new team?

Kirk Cousins was well on his way to another 4,000-yard season before his Achilles injury. In eight games, he completed nearly 70% of his passes for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. This comes out to an average of 291.4 passing yards and 2.3 TD passes a game. In fantasy football, this is decent production on a week-to-week basis. It helped to have one of the best wide receivers in the game, Justin Jefferson, plus Jordan Addison and TJ Hockenson.

Cousins obviously didn’t rank well in total points since he missed half the season. However, he was the QB6 in points per game (18.7). During the eight weeks he played, he was the league leader in passing touchdowns, passing touchdowns over 50 yards, and 300+ yard passing games. Furthermore, it didn’t matter when Jefferson went out with an injury. Kirk Cousins was still able to maintain elite production.

Kirk Cousins 2024 Fantasy Outlook

There are two big question marks for Kirk Cousins in 2024. His Achilles is one of them. The 36-year-old quarterback will be attempting a comeback in under a year from a major injury. The repaired Achilles will need to hold up for a full season. Any time a player moves to a new team, there are questions. While there are plenty of weapons in Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson, there are questions about how they would gel together.

In a one-quarterback league, Kirk Cousins is your backup. He solidly fits into the QB2 role. If you are in a two-quarterback league, nabbing Cousins earlier than expected could pay dividends. No one knows about his injury recovery so let’s throw that variable out. Cousins has been successful with two different teams. He led Washington and Minnesota to playoff appearances. There is no reason to doubt that he can do it in Atlanta, too.

Final Thoughts

What keeps Kirk Cousins from breaking into the top 12 for fantasy football quarterbacks? His lack of rushing abilities. Quarterback rankings to win NFL games do not mimic quarterback rankings to win fantasy football. Justin Fields quarterbacked the worst team a couple of years ago and was a top-five fantasy QB thanks to his 1,100 yards rushing. Players like Jayden Daniels and Anthony Richardson may not have better stat lines than Cousins, but their rushing ability makes them more valuable in fantasy football.

The projections say he will likely throw for another 4,000 yards and probably have close to 30 touchdowns. Kirk Cousins gives you a safe floor but a low ceiling. There are only so many points he will score due to his limitations. Fantasy football is more about trying to find the players with higher ceilings. Having Cousins on your bench might be good for a spot start against a poor pass defense. However, his low ceiling will leave you wanting more over the course of a season.
