This year, Red Sox 2B Kristian Campbell is the AL Rookie of the Year favorite, but can he keep up his fabulous start?

Kristian Campbell, Red Sox (2/1)

Boston rookie 2B Kristian Campbell is the oddsmakers’ favorite in this market and down to 2/1 odds already, almost a month into the new MLB season. The 22-year-old Chattanooga, Tennessee native has fit into the Red Sox (20/1 to win 2025 World Series) infield perfectly and has gotten off to a decent start at the plate, with a .302 BA, a .900 OBS, 19 hits, three HR, and six RBI in 63 at-bats.

Campbell (6-3, 191) joins a couple of other decent infield prospects in the Red Sox farm system with SS Marcelo Mayer (AAA) and SS-2B Franklin Arias (A). If Campbell has a solid year in the field, continues to impress with the bat, and Boston makes a run at the Playoffs, Campbell will be bound to get votes from the BBWAA.

Jacob Wilson, A’s (+250)

The A’s are in limbo this season, playing in West Sacramento this season and in the immediate future, with a June groundbreaking for their new stadium in Las Vegas on the horizon. The franchise is scheduled to open up play in Sin City in 2028. The Athletics have a number of interesting prospects, including rookie SS Jacob Wilson (6-2, 190).

The 23-year-old native of Los Angeles has gotten off to a nice start with a .333 BA, .818 OBP, two HR, and eight RBI. The fact that this franchise will be playing its Home games at the bandbox that is Sutter Health Park should help lead to better offensive numbers for both Wilson and fellow rookie phenom Nick Kurtz.

Jasson Domínguez, Yankees (+450)

Yankees LF Jasson Domínguez doesn’t have the kind of start or numbers like Campbell or Wilson, but the season is still very young. This season (.259/HR/eight RBI), Campbell isn’t really off to a Rookie of the Year Award start, but let’s give him until summer. The 22-year-old product of the Dominican Republic came up to the Bronx in both 2023 (.258/4/7) and 2024 (.179/2/4), but this will be his true rookie season and year to make it in the big leagues. With Cody Bellinger (CF) and Aaron Judge (RF) in the same Yankees outfield, Domínguez is in good company and will learn from these two veterans.

Nick Kurtz, A’s (15/1)

The Athletics (180/1 to win the 2025 World Series) have a very low-ranked Farm system (#21), but do have two studs in Wilson and 1B Nic Kurtz. Wilson is already with the A’s this season, while it looks as if Kurtz may be the next call-up. A Wake Forest product, Kurtz (6-5, 240) was drafted with the No. 4 pick in Round one in 2024.

Currently, Kurtz (22) is playing in Triple-A for the Las Vegas Aviators, where he is batting .348 with seven HR and 22 RBI—all highs for the club. At this current price of 15/1, Kurtz is worth a look for MLB futures bettors. It’s hard to see a pitcher winning the AL Rookie of the Year award again.

Cam Smith, Astros (25/1)

Like Domínguez, Astros 3B Cam Smith (.200/HR.6 RBI) isn’t off to a flying start at the plate, but with a strong rest of April and May, he can boost his stock in this ROY market. Smith (6-3, 224) is also 22 years old and a product of Lake Worth, Florida.

With the tepid start by both Houston (8-10) and Smith, it seems better to look at some of the longer shots in this marketplace. All of these guys will get playing time in 2025, but how much they use it and how much the writers decide to reward those performances are always the key.

Final Thoughts on AL Rookie of the Year Winner Pick

For now, this seems like a three-player race for the AL Rookie of the Year and one dependent on how soon the A’s call Kurtz up from the minor leagues. With Kurtz getting enough plate appearances at Sutter Health Park, he may be able to have a 20+ home run and 50+ RBI season, but like Wilson, he is playing on a team that no one really sees that much.

And these two young prospects may end up cannibalizing votes from each other. So the ultimate question may be, is Campbell for real, and can he have a great season and become a solid part of a growing Red Sox future? Campbell’s metrics are very impressive, and despite the 2/1 odds, he looks like the player most on track to win this coveted award in the AL for Rookie of the Year.
